Scientific Student Worker

Gsk

Upper Providence, Pennsylvania, United States

I completed my second co-op as a Scientific Student Worker part of the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics In Vitro group at GlaxoSmithKline's Research and Development Hub in Upper Providence, PA. During this six month period, I directed various studies on a weekly basis to contribute to the knowledge of the behavior of compounds in the drug development process. My training as a co-op began with learning how to operate the DMPK group's TECAN, using it to complete high throughput microsomal clearance assays on a weekly basis. During the course of this assay, I was responsible for loading the deck of the TECAN with the appropriate labware and solutions, preparing necessary solutions, and appropriate handling of biohazards. I was responsible for working up the data I received from the bioanalysis group following their analysis, along with reviewing the data and controls for each assay. Shortly after perfecting the process for the clearance assay, I learned the protocol for matrix stability assays in rat and human blood. While running this manual assay, I was responsible for proper handling of compounds and blood, timely collection of samples over the course of the incubation period of the assay, and proper disposal of biohazards. Once I felt confident in my understanding of the procedure, I was given the opportunity to assist in validating this assay on the TECAN. I independently conducted this assay on the TECAN seven times over the course of four months, reviewing the data alongside my supervisor each time and participating in discussions to improve the assay scripting on the TECAN. My resilience through the repeated testing and dedication to improving this assay enabled the In Vitro group to make great strides toward fully automating their matrix stability assay. In the final two months of my co-op I was also tasked with assisting in the validation of the microsomal clearance assay on a second, newly purchased TECAN so that the assay may run on both robots.

Water Analyst

As a full time intern through the Co-op program at Drexel, I analyzed the contents of wastewater for southwest Philadelphia using chemistry techniques. I was responsible for the analysis of 30+ samples per day, using techniques like pipetting and massing samples to gather data. On a daily basis, I followed standard operating procedures to perform titrations, use centrifuges, mass samples, mix solutions, and maintain a sample log for all of my work. Each day, I reported valuable data to the engineers at the wastewater control plant that was essential in understanding the functionality of the plant responsible for 300 million gallons of wastewater per day.
