I'm “all-in” kind of person, motivated by a deep drive to make a positive impact in the world. I dive in, fully to whatever is in front of me, from science and drug development, to my family and community building, from teaching and mentoring to outdoor adventuring. I am passionate, creative and determined in everything I do. My greatest professional joy comes from connecting concepts and leading the science, people and functions so that a strategy can be fully formed and its potential realized commercially to have the maximum impact to patients. I love to find efficiencies, and identify creative solutions to optimize drug development from discovery to the clinic and the company's portfolio strategy. This is what I am best at: seeing the Big Picture and bridging the gap in between the science (R&D) and the business case (Commercial), from either side, to allow for aligned portfolio and research strategies. - I use my deep scientific expertise to develop strategies to address significant unmet need, and collaborate cross-functionally to deliver innovative and impactful solutions for patients. - I translate strategic vision into tactical action from early research to product development with a focus on commercial impact. - I articulate vision, as a whole or in it's component parts, to any audience at any level. - I use my knowledge, experience and the power of communication to influence decisions, teach and inspire, and steer strategic direction. With these skills and my experience, I could fit into and excel in many roles, across several functions, where strategic thinking, scientific understanding, business acumen and collaborative leadership is required.I thrive by proactively improving my knowledge & skills so that I can take-on new challenges, whether personally: supporting my husband's brewery venture (Third Hill Brewing), or professionally: enabling scientific advances and for enriching my career prospects. Postdoctoral FellowThe National Institutes Of Health Jul 2011 - Jun 2019Bethesda, MdI lead several research projects exploring the cell biology of Parkin- and PINK1- mediated mitochondrial quality control, and its implications in the development of Parkinson's disease. I forged a new path in the Youle Lab and explored a novel hypothesis that damaged mitochondria that can not be cleared due to mutations in Parkin and PINK1 could trigger innate immune activation. This hypothesis led to identifying a role for the kinase TBK1 in clearing damaged mitochondria via interaction with the autophagy adapter OPTN, which was published as a co-first authorship in Nature in 2015. Most importantly, TBK1 is linked to innate immune activation in response to cytosolic DNA via activation of STING. Following up on this, my work then identified a causal role for activation of STING in the neurodegeneration of substantia nigral neurons in a mouse model of Parkinson's disease where damaged mitochondrial can not be cleared due to loss of Parkin. This work, published in Nature in 2018, has invigorated research on the role of neuroinflammatory processes in the development of neurodegenerative disease.Sliter, D.A., et. al. Postdoctoral ResearcherSuny Upstate Medical University Jan 2011 - Jul 2011Syracuse, NyI continued my thesis work to assess the function of candidate E3 ligases in IP3 receptor ubiquitination, and pharmacological agents in the processing of IP3 receptors for degradation. After leaving this lab, I continued in a collaborative effort using TALEN and CRISPR technology to delete candidate E3 ligases, resulting in greater understanding of the mechanism of IP3 receptor down-regulation. -
Graduate StudentSuny Upstate Medical University Sep 2004 - Dec 2010Syracuse, NyFor my thesis work, I studied the ubiquitination and degradation of inositol 1,4,5 -trisphosphate (IP3) receptors. IP3 receptors are regulated Ca2+ channels that aid in sequestering Ca2+ in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). The stimulated release of Ca2+ from ER stores is important for many cellular homeostatic processes and failure to regulate this process can lead to disease. My work focused on the signal that targets IP3 receptors for degradation following activation, ubiquitin. Realizing that traditional methods of studying ubiquitination would be cumbersome for IP3 receptor research, I developed a collaboration with the Gygi lab to use (then) cutting edge mass spectrometric techniques, resulting in the publication of two first-author papers and culminating in a Ph. D. with distinction. -
