About Danielle Torrez
A big piece of my educational philosophy is making students feel seen, heard and cared for. A huge reason why I wanted to become a teacher is so my students would feel seen, both in the curriculum and by me. At my core, I believe in building humanizing relationships with my students.I aim to make my History curriculum centered around the experiences of people and groups that have been historically marginalized and support my students through unpacking the various systems of oppression that exist in the US. My greatest successes are when I hear students be able to name the injustices that they’ve witnessed or experienced but also be critical in re-imagining a future without these injustices. I’ve led students through completing a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) project in which they critically examine and research issues in their community on topics such as gentrification, houselessness and the school-to-prison pipeline. I also have a strong belief in increasing equity and access for first generation college students of color in higher education and hope that they take these critical thinking skills with them to those spaces.
