I have recently obtained my Bachelor’s of Science in philosophy with a secondary degree in English with an emphasis in rhetoric and writing, and a minor in psychology at the University of Wisconsin—La Crosse. Within the philosophy program, I graduated with a GPA of 3.93 and a GPA of 3.80 within the English program as well as making the Dean's List six times. Throughout my time at UW—La Crosse, I have gained valuable knowledge and experience in a variety of subjects—such as multi-cultural studies, literature, sexuality studies, writing, and the sciences—but linguistic studies, philosophy of mind, and epistemology have become my central areas of concentration. In following this enterprise, I took special care to be an exemplar student by coming to class well-prepared, legitimately enjoying the heavy loads of reading material like the nerd I am, and taking diligent notes while still making sure to not be “that guy” by staying a fun-loving classmate. I have also presented various works at a number of academic conferences such as UW- La Crosse’s undergraduate research conference, the Wisconsin Philosophical Association, and the Philosophy and Pop Culture conference at Viterbo University. What was most important in my development as a philosopher, however, was my role as a dedicated tutor for both Introduction to Logic and Introduction to Philosophy in open and private sessions. In April of 2016, my efforts proved fruitful when I received the “Recognition of Excellence” Award from the College of Liberal Studies, which is presented annually to the top philosophy student as decided by a vote of the Philosophy Department faculty.It has become a personal goal of mine to make philosophy more accessible and appealing to all. Whether it be by addressing contemporary concerns, writing in plain language, or using pop culture references, by bringing philosophy out of the ivory tower and back into the agora, I believe the discipline will become more attractive to newcomers.
