I founded the Washington University Student Tutoring Initiative, a collective of students offering discounted tutoring to St. Louis area children adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Initiative serves as a clearinghouse, recruiting and vetting student tutors willing to work on a voluntary or low-cost basis and matching them with area children based upon academic needs, financial resources, and other circumstances.
The initiative was born out of the idea that we, as students, had a unique understanding of all the challenges children faced and in facing them ourselves, had the ability to help families overcome them. It was my way to help empower and strengthen my community at a time when people felt fearful and helpless and when tolerance, understanding, and social justice were endangered. For many university students, working in the initiative is how they hope to leave an impact on the community around them and I am proud to have inspired that. The initiative is now an ongoing, durable enterprise that has aided thousands in the St. Louis community and serves as a model for universities nationwide.

I independently ran the research on the novel product having been granted full autonomy by my PI. That freedom challenged me and instilled a heightened level of personal accountability, discipline, organization, and perseverance. The project allowed me to expand beyond traditional biology research and assume a more interdisciplinary focus. This, in turn, taught me the power of “connections” and allowed me to develop a more holistic, 360° approach to problem-solving.
Through participation in the venture competition and the extensive feedback I received therein, I learned the value of “many eyes” and constructive criticism. I developed the ability to challenge my assumptions and fearlessly alter my hypothesis to fit the data. Moreover, I learned how to package an idea or product into a compelling story that touches and motivates the audience.
The Precision Patch was conceived, designed, and engineered by me. The project taught me what it means to be innovative and entrepreneurial, thorough and impeccable in your research, cognizant of the limits of one’s knowledge, open to new ideas and the insights of others, and compelling in one’s presentation–values that I will employ in my medical career and beyond.
