Post-doctoral research associate working on the Cystic Fibrosis Trust-funded research project CF-EpiNet: Cystic Fibrosis Epidemiological Network-Harnessing Data to Improve Lives.I worked on the development of methods for linkage with Hospital Episode Statistics and other healthcare databases, and aim to investigate patterns of disease progression within the aging CF population. My research focused on exploring how different data sources can be used in large randomised trials. Routine health records, for example Hospital Episode Statistics, and national disease registries contain a wealth of information about patients that can be used to optimise both recruitment to trials and the follow-up of patients. The use of electronic health records will hopefully provide more cost-effective and efficient methods for research. My project aimed to utilize this data to determine whether using routine datasets is a viable option for improving recruitment and follow-up in clinical trials.

• Experience working on a variety of trials including cardiovascular and bariatric surgery trials• Responsibilities included producing reports for data monitoring committees, statistical analysis of data, development of statistical routines to check the validity and consistency of data, routine monitoring of data and follow-up questionnaires, preparation of database specifications, and preparation of recruitment reports submitted to the UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN). I also helped to maintain the theatre list database and produce relevant procedure reports for the cardiovascular research board and was involved with designing a template case report form pack for cardiology trials run by the unit.• Teaching experience included teaching, preparing assignment and exam material, and marking across a number of taught healthcare Masters Degrees.

• Internship at the Arthritis Research UK Primary Care Centre, Keele University which was attached to an NIHR Research Methods Fellowship• The internship included leading my own research project, attending study meetings and seminars and completing a master’s module in Statistics and Epidemiology. I was able to revisit the centre to undertake my independent project in the final year of my undergraduate degree, which enabled me to learn how to work independently.
