Danielle Steffenhagen was born in Sacramento, CA. She began writing at a young age, based on influences from her own life and the people around her. In high school, she was conflicted about what sort of writing to pursue. She had a passion for lyrical writing, poetry, creative writing and journalistic writing. By the time she graduated, she decided to go the journalistic route. Steffenhagen found a love for hard-hitting news—she moved to San Francisco to attend San Francisco State University and pursue her dream. After four years, she received a bachelor’s in print and online journalism, with a minor in English and American literature. Steffenhagen gained quite a few experiences with writing in college. During the summer of her sophomore year, she went back to her hometown of Elk Grove, CA, and took on an internship with the Elk Grove Citizen. The Elk Grove Citizen allowed her to work with arts and culture pieces as well as crime and safety pieces. She gained more confidence approaching strangers, sat in on staff meetings in the office, and worked along side professional photographers. During her senior year of college at SF State, Steffenhagen wrote for the school paper, the Golden Gate Xpress. On the paper, she was a reporter for the city section, with a focus on the government and politics beat. She also wrote breaking news stories for the online edition of Xpress. Throughout her time at SF State, Steffenhagen began to take an interest in video and multimedia stories. She spent her final semester at SF State learning about literary journalism and producing videos about a variety of subjects.
