I am a hard-working, dedicated, professional and passionate teacher of languages who is always learning. Whether it's experimenting and reflecting on my practice, or engaging in professional development and reading current literature to improve my practice and students' acquisition, or from the students themselves, including my own continual skill renewal incorporating being a language student of other languages (notably Spanish and most recently, Nyoongar and Latin). I am influenced by the work of Stephen Krashen and those who came after him, using comprehensible input strategies including from AIM (gestures), TPRS (reading and storytelling), and EPI (extended processing instruction) as suitable for my context: 1 - 3 hours a week of instruction in a regional private school in Australia, where additional languages are neither valued nor common, and opportunities for travel to French-speaking countries are rare and challenging from the perspective of both distance and cost. Doing things that are hard and require perseverance with a long-term goal in sight also don't seem to be highly valued; this may be generational. I believe in the importance of comprehensible input for second language acquisition and I enjoy employing new strategies learnt in my classroom. I believe direct instruction is important for language exposure, and thus the majority of my lessons are teacher-led. There may be opportunities to engage students in inquiry learning or visible thinking routines, but these are secondary to the dominant methodologies employed for successful language acquisition and have not been developed with the (very different) context of teaching language in mind.
