About Daniel Max Siegel

I am a computer scientist and entrepreneur who loves developing, leading teams and constantly learning. I began to code when I was ten years old, and began programming professionally while working on a degree in computer science at Ryerson University. My first job was to create in-house software for the Ryerson Digital Media Zone (DMZ), North America's #1 business incubator as ranked by UBI Global 2015. From there, I moved into tech startups, eventually creating my own.Working on startups taught me to work with a team and to wear many hats, from developer to client manager and from pitch coach to manager. My experiences in computer science, entrepreneurship, product development, artificial intelligence, and bringing startups to market have led me into a number of interesting industries ranging from social media platforms to business coordination tools and from education delivery networks to e-commerce. It has been very interesting to work on so many different types of things in a widely-distributed and scalable way.I'm passionate about seeing social change driven by the private sector, and hope to join teams that feel the same way!

Daniel Max Siegel Work Experience Details
  • Vts
    Senior Data Engineer
    Vts May 2022 - Present
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada
VTS is a technology platform for the commercial real estate industry which provides data insights and solutions in order to assist with investment and asset strategy, leasing and marketing automation, property operations, and tenant experience. It is the largest first-party data source in the industry, making data engineering for the company a very interesting and challenging role.As a data engineer at VTS my primary responsibilities are to maintain ETL pipelines, manage services and data in AWS, and to use machine learning to create insights. I am also responsible for helping push technology initiatives that will help the company transition from a "Data as a Service" to a "Data as a Product" sales model.
  • Compass Digital
    Full Stack Developer
    Compass Digital Jan 2021 - Sep 2021
    Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Compass Digital Labs is the digital arm of Compass Group - a global hospitality company and one of the world's largest employers. In my role at CDL, I was responsible for developing a large number of disparate services that are related to the smooth operation of the restaurant industry, such as APIs managing orders and menus. One of my main responsibilities was updating and maintaining a service used by large, brand-name restaurant clients to holistically manage their locations across Canada and the United States. I left Compass in order to return to school to study artificial intelligence, but it was a wonderful employer that I would highly recommend.
  • Zulily
    Software Development Engineer Ii
    Zulily Oct 2018 - Sep 2020
    Seattle, Wa
Zulily is a large, Seattle-based online retailer that is primarily geared toward filling the home needs of mothers and their families. As a backend developer there, I primarily worked on an API for our mobile applications that enabled them to receive and display dynamic content and achieve Zulily's goal of being special, new, and different every single day. This position involved working closely with engineers who specialize in infrastructure, databases, iOS, and Android development to coordinate on an interface that's flexible, efficient, and future-proof.A significant role I played was introducing tools to ensure data integrity in the services I worked. On top of developing our platform, the small team I worked on introduced API validation as a standard across the company, and was involved in rolling out the company's first major unit testing effort.During my time at Zulily, I also contributed to other parts of the company including the website, the iOS application, some of the company's core services, our server configurations, and of course, the documentation.Unfortunately I had to leave the position in order to return from Seattle to Toronto, but loved my time with the company and would highly recommend the Zulily team to any potential employees!
  • X Movement
    Software Development Engineer I
    X Movement May 2015 - Sep 2018
    Toronto, Canada Area
X Movement helps youth build healthy mental and physical life habits through in-school and online mindfulness and movement experiences. The curriculum, impacting 1,000,000 people in the 2018-19 school year, is evidence-based and built using the world-class pedagogies of whole-child education, edutainment, 21st-century learning, character education, inquiry-based learning, physical literacy and mental wellbeing strategies. At the company I led an internal team in the development and marketing of the digital platform X Movement Online. X Movement Online is a service for elementary school teachers that aims to build and connect healthy global citizens through real-world movement and mindfulness challenges in their classrooms. The platform has been launched into over 400 schools in Ontario, Canada. My role on the team involved software engineering, server administration, team coordination and management, running Scrum, marketing, and customer segment research.
  • Voovo
    Co-Founder And Software Engineer
    Voovo Mar 2014 - May 2015
The Digital Media Zone At Ryerson University
Voovo was a service where users could crowdsource quotes for the printing and shipping of 3D printed models. it was born out of a passion for the emerging technology of 3D printing and its potential positive social impact. I co-founded Voovo, then called Materialyze, as the company's technical lead. We operated out of Ryerson’s startup incubator, the Digital Media Zone, and I led a small team of developers through rapid development using Scrum. Quickly navigating shifting customer interests and a service-changing pivot was a challenging but amazing experience.
  • Thumble
    Software Engineer
    Thumble Oct 2013 - Jan 2014
    Toronto, Canada Area
Thumble is Instagram meets Reddit. Users can post photos which are sorted into albums by topic. Photos can be upvoted, downvoted or 'bumped' by other users, a bump being a more powerful upvote that transfers points. Users who post great photos end up with a lot of bumps, and subsequently bump other great photos, creating a natural flow for high-power users to curate great content. Users are ranked by points and awarded achievements for participation.I helped develop Thumble on a small team of myself and three other coders until the company's dissolution. As well, we worked closely with a graphic designer and business managers. I played many development roles in this company. I began by working on back-end code and test cases, and moved on to work on the app itself. As well as developing, I also participated in guerilla marketing campaigns.
  • Digital Media Zone At Ryerson University
    Software Engineer
Digital Media Zone At Ryerson University Apr 2013 - Sep 2013
Ryerson University runs one of the world's leading business incubators, the Ryerson DMZ (previously the Digital Media Zone). UBI Global 2015 named it the best incubator in North America, and a world leader in fostering startups. I worked for the Digital Media Zone developing in-house software to make sure that operations ran smoothly. The staff used a web-based management platform to find and change information about the people, teams, equipment, rooms and other things that ran out of the incubator. I had to keep it running smoothly and create new functionality. As well, to design other applications for the web, I had to learn frameworks in Java and Actionscript 3.0. An important part of the job was coding independently but working closely with a graphic designer to ensure that nothing was off-brand.
