Raleigh-based LEGO artist Dan McAvinchey wears a number of creative hats: software developer, guitarist, composer, and writer. Towards the end 40-year career in IT (culminating in an 8-year stint at UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Government), McAvinchey took an unexpected leap into the art world in 2018, and began creating large works with the family's LEGO bricks. After only five years, he has completed over 420 pieces, with subjects including fine art (Van Gogh, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Robert Indiana), pop culture (Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Scarlet Johansson, Batman), guitar (Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix), contemporary art (works by Karl Bang, LeRoy Neimen, Amina Lei, Roy Lichtenstein), sports (Michael Jordan, Joe Namath, Kobe Bryant, team logos) and animals (elephants, big cats, gorillas, horses, birds).
