I have had the good fortune to have two overlapping careers – in research and company leadership. Working with a treasured and excellent group of colleagues, I founded Semantic Sciences Pty Ltd in 2008 which spun off a much-loved child and Sintelix Pty Ltd in 2017. I am currently CEO of both companies.The key inspirations of my life are spirituality, creativity, positive communication and the wish to create lasting benefit. These are the areas where I wish to grow, learn and give back; they drive my passions: • Creating software products enabled by advanced algorithms • Creating wholistic work environments • Creating open effective organisations • Excellence in execution • High-impact philanthropyIn my earlier research career, I led the Business Intelligence and Information Analysis research groups in CSIRO, and before that was Research Leader, Data Fusion at the Cooperative Research Centre for Sensor Signal and Information Processing, based in Adelaide, Australia. I was educated at Oxford where I gained my MA and DPhil (PhD) degrees. I have held posts in University of Manchester, and as an Associate Professor at the University of South Australia.

Senior Consultant (Level 8)Csiro - The Commonwealth Scientific And Industrial Research Organisation Jan 2000 - Oct 2008Acton, Act, AuI joined CSIRO to form the Business Intelligence Group. We began a long-term exploration of grammars and their application to language and other domains. In 2002 I won two large projects from Boeing in connection with the Australian AWACS system (Air 5077). These projects created and demonstrated the world's first mathematically coherent algorithm for Level 2 data fusion (based on a spatio-temporal grammar). We also developed a cognizant control room that constantly monitored the awareness of human controllers via their speech and actions and compared it with the system's situation picture so as to provide guidance and warnings. This work led to a series of projects on language technology with Boeing and resulted in the development of Functional Combinatory Categorial Grammar and the Sem@ntica suite of tools. -
Research Leader Data FusionCooperative Research Centre For Sensor Signal And Information Processing Mar 1995 - Nov 1999At CSSIP I was principal investigator for fifteen research contracts, with topics that include land-mine detection, airborne early warning and control, situation assessment, Bayesian networks, fusion for submarine mission systems, bone fracture classification and prosthesis tracking. I supervised the construction of three major software packages, Spotter (multispectral target detection), Probanet (a Bayesian networks tool kit) and Tracker (a generalised tracking package). I had the opportunity to organise and contribute to short courses on various aspects of data fusion.

I had a wonderful time on my British Rail scholarship - fixing massive diesel engines and other boys toys. However, in the end, I realised the problem was bigger than I was and left to do a PhD, where I thought I would be able to make a difference.
