Graduate StudentUcla Engineering Materials Science, Bruce Dunn Electrochemistry Group Jun 2009 - Jan 2014Los Angeles, Ca, UsFocused on electrochemical characterization of energy storage materials including 3D lithium ion batteries, carbon nanotube (CNT) supercapacitors and niobium pentoxide pseudocapacitors. Specialized in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and computer programming for data analysis. Hands on experience with fabricating and testing electrochemical materials inside argon filled gloveboxesSynthesized and characterized quasi-solid electrolyte made by sol-gel encapsulation of ionic liquid. Encapsulated ionic liquids are contained in a three dimensional network of silica that preserves their ionic conductivity unlike gelation methods. The silica network was characterized by nitrogen gas adsorption after supercritical drying with CO2.Fabricated and characterized supercapacitors with CNT electrodes, deposited by electrophoretic deposition, with encapsulated ionic liquid as the electrolyte. Built custom testing fixtures and gained experience with conductive epoxies, machining, packaging and gloveboxes. Years of practice with probe station performing impedance on micron sized rods for three dimensional micro battery electrodes. Developed an electrochemical technique to detect and characterize pinholes in conformal non-planar solid electrolytes by using redox couples and fundamental electrochemistry. Designed and wrote a visual basic program to process the large volume of data produced from these measurements. -
Nsf-Sponsored Internship ProgramRaytheon Jul 2012 - Sep 2012Arlington, Va, UsLearned cleanroom basics and gained hands on experience with spin coating positive and negative photoresists, plasma cleaning and ion milling. Developed and tested methods for integrating energy storage by electrodeposition on micron dimensions in a process compatible with semiconductor fabrication. -
Research AssistantUc Davis Physics, Shirley Chiang Condensed Matter Group Apr 2007 - Sep 2007Davis, California, UsMaintained an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) system and learned basic UHV samplepreparation and manipulation for XPS, STM and LEEM experiments.
