About Daniel Micallef
Prof. Ing. Daniel Micallef is an academic with interests in wind energy, fluid mechanics, wind engineering, and building physics. He currently serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Malta in the Faculty for the Built Environment. He is also an associate member of the Institute for Sustainable Energy at the same institution.In 2008, Daniel earned his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Malta with first-class honors. He began his career as an energy analyst at the Malta Resources Authority in the public sector.Driven by his passion for wind energy and fluid dynamics, Daniel pursued his doctoral studies with the DUWIND group at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, in collaboration with TUDelft and the University of Malta. His research focused on understanding flow phenomena near the tips of wind turbine blades, using methods like vortex codes and particle image velocimetry. He obtained his Ph.D. from TUDelft in 2012.Following his doctoral studies, Daniel continued his engineering work as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Malta, concentrating on Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element Analysis, especially in relation to innovative welding techniques. He then became a resident academic at the University of Malta.Daniel is an active researcher with publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals and conferences worldwide. He has held editorial roles in the journals "Experimental Results" by Cambridge University Press and "Energies" by MDPI.Beyond research, Daniel contributes to academia by teaching undergraduate and master's courses. He also served as the President of the Chamber of Engineers of Malta, demonstrating his leadership and dedication to the engineering community.Daniel has a track record of successfully securing research funding for various projects at both local and European levels. He has taken on leadership roles as a project leader and work package leader in multiple research initiatives.
