I am now applying my past editing experience to the freelance market.Sample freelance experience:~Manuscript Line Editing and Revision—I have performed line editing and given detailed notes and suggestions for revision for various manuscripts and manuscript proposals from authors seeking publication.~PreMediaGlobal—This project involved editing manuscripts and supporting information for publication in the leading academic sciences journal PNAS according to PNAS and CSE Manual style. The project ended when PreMediaGlobal did not renew its contract with PNAS.~Brown Books Publishing Group—This completed project involved editing a six-volume book series on leadership, titled the SCOPE of Leadership, according to Chicago style.

Subjects taught: Algebra, Geometry, US History, World History, Journalism, Music Production, Podcasting, Creative Writing, HealthThis small alternative learning environment has constantly brought forth new challenges and wonderful successes for me as a teacher, and I have grown immensely. Our focus is on building trust and community for students typically deemed "unreachable" by the larger system. We rely on mentoring, experiential learning, self-guided exploratory projects, and continual self-assessment to foster learning and grow participation and trust. Many students come to our school with significant trauma, anxiety, and other experiences that have impacted their learning at more traditional schools, and many are also home- and food-insecure. Several students end up with IEPs for the first time simply because we are able to notice needs that have gone undiagnosed for years. We all work hard to give our students stability, love and understanding, and a good education. I have taught a diverse range of subjects both alone and as part of a team and am proud to call Mica Peak my home.

Subjects taught: Algebra 2, Precalculus, Honors/Pre-AP Precalculus, AP Calculus ABDuring my time at Nimitz High School in Irving I was asked to switch subjects mid-semester, from Algebra 2 to Precalculus and Calculus. While this was difficult for me and the students, it was still a rewarding experience and I learned many new things. The school has a large number of minority and economically impacted students, and I received regular training on ELL learning environments, special education and scaffolding, and equitable teaching practices. I also successfully wrote two grants for the district that allowed me to take the Calculus students on two experiential field trips to NASA headquarters in Houston.

This was a yearlong project (beginning in the summer and continuing throughout the school year) to develop a new district-wide curriculum for Algebra 2. A partner and I built a course framework from scratch using Understanding by Design methodology and our newly adopted textbook as guides. We created complex lessons with various options for bell ringers, lesson extensions, and online or experiential components, all while adhering to state learning standards. Lessons also included learning trees for ELL and SPED students with appropriate scaffolding and "deep dives" for advanced or gifted students. We checked in regularly with our supervisor and produced materials according to strict, regular deadlines.

This position involved training client school districts in AP Insight: Calculus, which was an expansion of Advanced Placement Exam resources that the College Board sold to participating districts. I learned how the AP Insight program worked intimately and then taught the main functions to other teachers in online training sessions using a set of predesigned materials through WebEx. I was also trained in leading in-person weekend seminars where the same program was explored in more detail.

Subjects taught: Algebra 2My first teaching appointment, at Corsicana High School, was instrumental in my persistent desire to work with underserved populations. The school had a student population of over 2,000 students and 85% of them qualified for free or reduced lunch due to socioeconomic status. There were significant minority and English-language-learning populations, poverty, pregnancy, and drug use. In my first two years I focused on building relationships with students, using proactive behavior modification and positive reinforcement strategies, and varying lesson approach using group learning, scaffolding, and multiple modes (visual, auditory, etc.).

As an editor for an independent book publisher, I worked to develop projects to their fullest market potential. Much of my work as a copy editor and proofreader involved careful editing and attention to the manuscript’s proper adherence to the chosen document style, often Chicago or AP style, but occasionally AMA and other styles as needed. I also crafted cover copy to garner interest from potential buyers and, depending on the project, effectively functioned as a project manager or coordinator. Occasionally more developmental editing was needed as well to bring the project to fruition. I worked directly with the sales team and book designers to ensure all parts of the book made sense consistent with its main content. Genres included children's books, self-help, historical fiction, science fiction, travel, and religion.

I began work at Cram Crew as a tutor (or consultant per company definition), primarily tutoring high school students to prepare for various proficiency and college entrance exams, with an additional emphasis on college entrance essays. This required maintaining my own schedule of appointments, soft-selling services to potential new clients, and keeping detailed logs of appointments and hours worked. I progressed to producing marketing materials and eventually authoring training manuals for new consultants. I also worked on other company books on composition and related subjects.

This position marked an early exposure to writing marketing copy and editing e-mails, pamphlets, and other documents, as well as adding to the company's online presence. I handled data entry for the company, organization of shared calendars, and regular reports. There was also a strong emphasis on pleasant, professional conduct with present and potential clients and high customer satisfaction.
