At Clark Nexsen, I undertook challenging designs for clients such as the University of Virginia, Duke University, the Department of Defense, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and many others.I led and supported the design of property protection and life safety systems, including fire sprinkler systems, special suppression systems, detection and notification systems, passive fire protection systems, and smoke management and control systems. Much of my project involvement required the proficient use of leading industry software such as Revit and AutoCAD.Our team of senior FPEs, FP designers, and production staff collaborated with Architects on every project to ensure all occupants of the building under design would be safe from the effects of fire, in accordance with applicable ICC, NFPA, DoD, and regional codes and standards. When the FPE group employed performance-based fire protection methods, I was heavily involved in the design fire selection process and the construction of complex fire models.

I worked in a small team of fellow students to provide and analyze data trends on the effectiveness of fire suppression and detection systems. Using National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) databases, I ran Microsoft Access queries to find relationships between type of structure, types of systems in place, and casualty rates in all qualifying reported fire incidents 2003-2010.During and after data analysis took place, I assisted the Fire Protection Engineering Department Chair with preparing the final report and accompanying presentation delivered to an array of Fire Protection Engineering professionals.

While interning with the National Park Service, I inventoried and inspected fire protection systems in all Park structures. Additionally, I performed both prescriptive and performance based fire protection analyses of Park Service structures and worked with a team of Park Service employees to run hydraulic calculations on hydrant and automatic suppression systems.At all Outer Banks Area Parks and Sites, I was the point of contact for all matters relating to structural fire protection. I worked closely with the Southeast Regional Structural Fire Management Officer and the National Structural Fire Protection Program Lead to ensure all Park Service buildings and systems met national standards for safety.Upon completion of the internship, I received a Department of the Interior Special Thanks for Achievement (STAR) Award for my contributions and advancement of the Structural Fire Program.
