Initially employed through IPA, contract was later transferred to PAD. Developed and executed pilots for a mobile phone-based agricultural extension system for Kenyan farmers and built a platform that launched in June 2018 and now has 460,000 farmers and agronomic advice on ten crops from pre-planting to post-harvest. Established a mobile phone-based education service to provide math exercises to primary schools students while Kenyan schools were closed during the pandemic. Supported PAD India to open a new office, run pilots and develop a platform for a project to reduce crop residue burning in Punjab and Haryana using the Happy Seeder technology.Training staff in data analysis in Stata and SQL and message programming using Erlang on Gitlab. Managing relationships with partners including the World Bank, County governments, and the Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International. Coordinating IRB approvals, preparing budgets, supervising data collection and analysis and other activities related to rigorous impact evaluation. Worked with One Acre Fund to develop and run trials on their communications with farmers. Consulting on other projects including Kenya dairy, Uganda coffee, and India (Odisha) automated profiling.

Working with Precision Agriculture for Development (PAD) on research activities in Kenya, scaling up from Western Kenya to nationwide. Supervising data collection and analysis and other activities related to rigorous impact evaluation. Planning and executing program activities: identify priorities, meet with stakeholders, run pilots, launch programs, and monitor project implementation. Create budgets and prepare financial reports. Training staff on working in Stata, SurveyCTO, Excel, Echo Mobile and PADDY.

Helped to plan and execute annual summits (up to five weeks each), focusing on building creative capacity by designing technologies that address pressing challenges for low-income communities worldwide. Worked with community members and partners to create the ventures to disseminate the products. Worked with teams to help them understand the design process and develop implementation strategies for their prototypes. Lead Organizer for IDDS 2014 in Arusha, managing the entire organizing team as well as training organizers. Curriculum Lead for IDDS 2016 in Lahore, supervising the development of the curriculum. Coordinated writing the proposal to create the International Development Innovation Network (IDIN), now part of the USAID Global Development Lab.

Conducted market-testing trials for new products to get feedback from shopkeepers and users before they went into manufacturing and production. Created marketing materials using Adobe InDesign and Illustrator. Designed surveys, analyzed data and prepared reports on the findings. Researched new products for Essmart’s catalog of life-improving products for communities in southern India. Maintained SalesForce system.

Greater Boston Area

Launched the Scaling Development Ventures conference for MIT students who have moved past the pilot stage and are working to address the challenges of scaling up to learn from people with experience in this space. Worked on MIT's IDEAS Global Challenge to run events during the academic year, organize the details of the competition and support 42 student teams as they submitted their proposals. Helped MIT students navigate the university's international development ecosystem.

Tanzania

Early hire at a pedal-power technology start-up in Tanzania. Helped to grow company and develop essential systems in grant-writing, accounting (using QuickBooks and Xero), sales management and human resources. Conducted field research and market analyses, including literature reviews, village interviews and feasibility studies. Established a technology design workshop in Arusha for innovators to work on their inventions.

Kenya

Served as academic master for school and managed the school’s laboratory. Taught 30 lessons per week in Agriculture, Chemistry, Math, and Physics, based on the Kenya National Education Commission curriculum. Developed projects with students and community to raise interest in agriculture, science and the environment and worked with other volunteers around the country on these efforts. Also promoted HIV awareness and discussion of health issues.
