Teach all subjects in a bilingual elementary classroom. Plan lessons, create schedules, communicate with parents and administrators in English and Spanish. Use school data to facilitate understanding of students’ academic progress and to support individualized behavioral and academic support. Provide pull-out support for students in math and literacy development in both English and Spanish. Design and teach online courses in composition, creative writing, and literature, following departmental policies and SD Board of Regents guidelines for general education courses. Repair and restore client vessels, usually working independently from the start of a project to its completion. Taught a weekly class in traditional wooden boatbuilding for adults and supported summer camp programming.

Selected solicited and unsolicited manuscripts for publication in one of three issues annually. Promoted the journal and work to increase readership in print and online. Edited all accepted manuscripts for length and clarity as well as grammar and usage.

Wrote short and long-form magazine stories with a strong connection to the greater Portland area for the print publication and online. Took photographs and produced multimedia projects both as standalone pieces and to accompany written work. Performed some research and fact-checking as needed.

Reported and wrote news articles and features on progress in South Dakota towns. Interviewed public officials and private citizens, generated story ideas, took photographs to accompany written work.

Worked with students, faculty, and staff to draft, edit, and revise creative and academic writing. Ran conversation groups and held editing sessions to help international students improve written and spoken English. Created a friendly environment in which writers were comfortable sharing their work.

Worked to establish Oval’s presence as a new literary student group on campus. Helped organize weekly meetings to discuss manuscripts submitted for publication in the journal.
