Assistant Manager
Pinnocchio'S
I was hired two weeks after returning to Aspen in June of 1972 to meetup with my then girl friend, Rosanne Bank (Bronx, NY); I quickly progressed from short order cook/pizza-maker, to prep-cook to baker to Assistant Manager. Michael McCowen, my good friend & roommate, and I served as co-assistant managers under the Manager, Joe Gardner, and the owners - Steve Gehring, Doug Hose and Pat Baze. Many of my co-workers became my good friends including, but not limited to, the aforementioned Joe Gardner, Jon Gardner (Joe's brother), Dog-man, Sammy (dated Nancy), Hank, Jay (Red), Kim Kartzmer a.k.a. Razme' de la Crackers, George Sutton (Victorville, CA), Frank & Kathy, Taylor, Beth (dated Joe Gardner) Jamie (she), Tim (who started his own sandwich shop) and Jeffery Meyer (New Jersey). The pharmacologically fueled going's on included a number of work place romances including, but not limited, the aforementioned Rosanne Bank, Karen, Jamie, Ellen (Rosanne's friend) and Barbara Kraft who accompanied me to Boulder/CU post-Aspen and then broke up with me! My Bro, Pete Thompson, even did a stint a Pinnocchio's and absolutely hated it when I said '90 on', meaning we have orders for 90 hamburgers all at once, which occurred sporatically during the high-season e.g. mid-summer/mid-winter. Note: the day I departed for Boulder Kathy (Frank's girlfriend) was going into labor. Note: For those of you experiencing the early stages of dementia, Pinocchio's was located right next to Crossroad Drug diagonally across the street from The Shaft, who served-up the best crab Benedict, at the intersection of E. Cooper & Hunter St./Hwy 82 before they moved down the street, across from Aspen Sports, followed by their unfortunate demise. Special mention re: Fred Ott, Ricky Schwatz, Marjorie Ice, Karen Shettle and Leslie Bouroff all of whom I met through Rosanne and to Fred's Boulder friend Cush, who had the most awesome stereo w/a quadraphonic Mcintosh amp quadrupled to 4 Bose 901 speakers - Wow!
