Histopathology/Electron Microscopy Technician - Department Of GastroenterologyMedical University Of South Carolina 1980 - 1982Upon my graduation from the U. of Wisc., and after a one month job search during which I drove from South Carolina, to Georgia, to Florida, to Alabama, to Mississippi, to Louisiana, to Texas and back, I was hired by Dr. F. Pittman to prepare bacterial, protozoan and tissue samples for light & electron microscopic examination; perform light & electron (SEM & TEM) microscopic examinations, maintain hela cell cultures, perform HPLC analysis of tissue and fecal samples; generate, collect & prepare research data for publication (see publications). Dr. Pitttman's lab was located adjacent to the medical center at VA hospital.Hiring manager: Dr. Fred Pittman (retired)Supervisors: Drs. William Lushbaugh (U. of MIss.), Charles Humphreys (CDC) and Masood AlamCo-workers: Ann, Jerry, Dave and fellow EM-tech, Carey.Note: I received a call out-of-the-blue from Bill, the manager of the central electron microscopy laboratory at the MUSC, who asked me if I had ever considered a job in sales, to which I responded 'No.': after a consultation with my immediate supervisor I agreed to take the job at LKB Instruments on the condition that if it did not work out I could return to my job as histopath tech (Thanks again Bill!). Owing my ability to work in a variety laboratory settings combined with a significant increase in earnings I looked back only to remember the generosity of my mentors Bill, Charlie and Masood.... -
Assistant Bar ManagerThe Brooklyn Grill (Formerly Brooklyn) Aug 1979 - Aug 1980Randy Mueller and I were hired as the consortium of owner/investors (Ron Detjin, Larry Hirshberg, et. al.) were wrapping-up the restoration of the historic building located in an industrial neighborhood on South Main once called Brooklyn: Randy and I jointly made the decisions re: the wine, liquor, beer, food and staff selections and co-managed the bar/restaurant during my relatively short tenure due to an EtOH fueled altercation with Mr. Detjin resulting in my termination, which allowed me once again to focus on academics and obtain my BS degree - whew! A shout-out to two friends/fellow staffers - the late Mary Harmon (what a sweetie!) and my Bro Peter Thompson.
-
Bar ManagerOshkosh Country Club Sep 1977 - Apr 1979Oshkosh, Wi, UsI managed the bar staff and the liquor/beer/wine inventory under the competent supervision of the OCC Manager, Bob Dove. I organized said staff & inventory for banquets, weddings and golf outings. Due to the business profile i.e. country club, it was a pretty low-key job with the exception of Thursday nights when I hosted the men's buck-up game, a version of poker, which included both high and low-rolling members and typically lasted into the wee-hours. Due to a non-PC romantic dalliance with a subordinate (female) Mr. Dove was forced to terminate my tenure prematurely with the upside being extended unemployment benefits which allowed me to focus on academics and pursue my BS degree - whew!A shout-out to T.J. Rogers re: the acquisition & renovation of the club house - T.J's. Highland Steakhouse, which I still frequent on my infrequent trips to Oshkosh with my Bro, Barrister Williams. -
Waiter/Bar TenderPioneer Inn And Marina Sep 1976 - Oct 1977I waited tables in the main dining room under the watchful eye of the hotel manager Mike Ingot: whose reputation among that staff was unanimous (-). Due in part to the management issues, the busIness was in decline prior to the Berqstom acquisition (1978). A shout-out to my 'man in arms', Ron, who unfortunately had to resign in order to assume his role as father due to an unexpected pregnancy - miss you man!For the record, I served two stints @ the Pioneer; the first as described above and the second as a bartender post the Bergtrom acquisition: my man-in-arms during my second stint was Bob (tall, handsome, mustached & acutely gregarious). Sadly, after the new addition burned down the property fell into disrepair and eventually closed. Notice: I am in the initial stages of forming the 'Friends of the Pioneer' in an effort to resurrect and recreate the tier-1 lakeside destination. Call or text me if you're interested in participating.

Bus-Boy, WaiterGreenbriar Inn The Aug 1975 - Mar 1977I began as Art Rolander's bus-boy serving his customers in station #1, where Rudy (the owner) sat all the VIP customers (including UC profs & drug dealers). I eventually graduated to waiter by the time of my departure. Many of my coworkers became good friends including, but not limited to, Chris Osborn (Chicago), Mario Andrews (Cincinnati), Chrystal (Mario's girl friend), Fred Emery, Jan Fry, John (long hair), Bob & Sue Bocke, Binkly (Cocomo, Id.), Tom (ran a Denver bathhouse), David (Nancy's roommate). My tenure included a number of short-term romances with Jan (sorry Fred), Jackie (salad dept.), Nancy (cocktail waitress) and Bob's sister(?). Sadly, I have lost touch with many of these folks, but I hold onto the great memories & prospect of getting together with them in the future (so call me if you're reading this!). FYI: I moved to Boulder, in part, to get away from the drug culture in Aspen, but on my very first night of work at Greenbriar Inn, while sorting silverware, I was invited outside to share a joint among the existing staff! -
Waiter & Bar BackHotel Boulderado Sep 1974 - May 1975Boulder, Colorado, UsI waited tables & performed bar-back duties in the former dining room/bar located in the basement level of the hotel. Since the hotel was very popular and the CU students liked to drink the happy hours were typically an exercise in chaos management. The senior bartender, Mike, took me under his wing and became my bartending mentor which led to a number of stints bartending, which turned out to be a valuable skill set while financing & attending college. Thanks Mike! -

Assistant ManagerPinnocchio'S Jun 1972 - Mar 1974I was hired two weeks after returning to Aspen in June of 1972 to meetup with my then girl friend, Rosanne Bank (Bronx, NY); I quickly progressed from short order cook/pizza-maker, to prep-cook to baker to Assistant Manager. Michael McCowen, my good friend & roommate, and I served as co-assistant managers under the Manager, Joe Gardner, and the owners - Steve Gehring, Doug Hose and Pat Baze. Many of my co-workers became my good friends including, but not limited to, the aforementioned Joe Gardner, Jon Gardner (Joe's brother), Dog-man, Sammy (dated Nancy), Hank, Jay (Red), Kim Kartzmer a.k.a. Razme' de la Crackers, George Sutton (Victorville, CA), Frank & Kathy, Taylor, Beth (dated Joe Gardner) Jamie (she), Tim (who started his own sandwich shop) and Jeffery Meyer (New Jersey). The pharmacologically fueled going's on included a number of work place romances including, but not limited, the aforementioned Rosanne Bank, Karen, Jamie, Ellen (Rosanne's friend) and Barbara Kraft who accompanied me to Boulder/CU post-Aspen and then broke up with me! My Bro, Pete Thompson, even did a stint a Pinnocchio's and absolutely hated it when I said '90 on', meaning we have orders for 90 hamburgers all at once, which occurred sporatically during the high-season e.g. mid-summer/mid-winter. Note: the day I departed for Boulder Kathy (Frank's girlfriend) was going into labor. Note: For those of you experiencing the early stages of dementia, Pinocchio's was located right next to Crossroad Drug diagonally across the street from The Shaft, who served-up the best crab Benedict, at the intersection of E. Cooper & Hunter St./Hwy 82 before they moved down the street, across from Aspen Sports, followed by their unfortunate demise. Special mention re: Fred Ott, Ricky Schwatz, Marjorie Ice, Karen Shettle and Leslie Bouroff all of whom I met through Rosanne and to Fred's Boulder friend Cush, who had the most awesome stereo w/a quadraphonic Mcintosh amp quadrupled to 4 Bose 901 speakers - Wow!

BartenderMichael'S Airport Lounge Nov 1973 - Nov 1973Truth be told, I failed to disclose that I had zero bartending experience vis a vis 'fake it until you make it.' strategy: after about an hour and a number of complaints from the wait staff the owner/manager Michael Elmer fired me on the spot, subsequently I can claim to have one of the shortest jobs on record!
-
Pizza Delivery ManThe Red Lantern Sep 1971 - May 1972After returning from my fist stint in Colorado I delivered pizzas, washed dishes and cooked pizzas, burgers & fries. Since the Red Lantern (Irving & Jackson Streets) was close to the U. of Zero campus the majority of deliveries were to the dorms and student housing. Since I had long hair at the time I was given the option of wearing hair-net or wig - I chose the wig, which freaked-out a few folks. The staff included a number of friends not limited to Chris Zirschmede (RIP), John Iwata, Tom & Candy Reyholds and Donnie Splitburger who served me a monster burger at the end each of my shifts. The Manager, Jim Kemnitz, taught me one very valuable lesson during my tenure, 'When you have time to lean you have time to clean.'. One memorable night occurred when I delivered a pizza to a festive party (a frequent experience when one delivers pizzas on a university campus) where I was handed a large balloon filled with nitrous oxide and instructed to take a 'big hit', which I promptly did, subsequently when I pulled out of the driveway I could not remember where I was or where the hell I was going!
-
Goss BundlerMiles Kimball Co Jun 1970 - Sep 1970I bundled goss (un-cut catalog pages) on a very large and very greasy printing press, which is the last step in the process of printing the catalogue pages prior to the final binding process. Since I was the low-man-on-the-totem-pole I was charged with degreasing the gears of the printing press on a periodic basis, which may have been the worst job I've had in my entire life. The upside was that I earned enough money to move to Colorado with my Bros. Pete Thompson and Jim Smith - Yeah! -
Marina AttendantSpellman'S Marina Jun 1966 - Sep 1969I manned the boat house where I sold snacks, beverages, etc.; I pumped gas; I pumped-out waste holding tanks and I launched boats part-time during the summers of my high school years. My step-father, Bob, was a career marine mechanic at Spellman's for >25 years reporting to Francis and then his son Butch Spellman. My Bros. Tom McQuire, Pete Thompson and Chuck Williams were frequent visitors since I was able to sell them the beer (illegally of course!) which we consumed while enjoying the 'endless-summers' of water skiing on Lake Winnebago and Butte Des Mortes - those were the days!
