I joined a team as their front-end developer with responsibility for enhancing existing pages for responsive layout, and assisting migration from a Drupal-based CMS. I started work on promo landing pages and email templates, and developed Javascript and PHP-based templates and a Grunt build process for SCSS and image optimisation. For rapid delivery of promo & support sites in multiple languages, I implemented a process to allow translators to edit content in Word, which was then sanitised and imported into templates to generate over a dozen sites.CMC also had a multi-step, multi-page registration process which I was involved with redesigning and reimplementing using Bootstrap, AJAX and a CakePHP application. The form had to work in multiple languages, with region-specific custom logic. I then had to enhance the forms to support rapid loading, third-party themes, and embedding in the main CMC site.

I was brought in to assist an HCL dev team delivering a new design to streamline the Quote and Buy process. Delivery was across 3 sites (brands), with shared code and platform, based on Adobe CQ5 and a Cognifide application. I matched the Photoshop designs in a responsive layout using OO-SCSS (SASS) using Grunt & Compass, and some adaptation using Javascript. I also resolved long-standing UI and performance issues on iPad and mobile.

Adapted an existing bespoke ecommerce site for reuse for its sister-brand. Required setting up the dev environment, adapting Velocity templates and developing responsive layout and inheritence mechanisms. Securely integrated to APIs.Spent 10 months enhancing and rolling out an Apache Velocity-based site template scheme for articles in 15 of their scientific Journals ( http://www.nature.com/reviews ), including responsive layout, utilising CSS3 media queries client-side adaptation.Built a Wordpress theme to seamlessly overlay blog functionality for Nature's Journals, using their extant design and layout and building on Wordpress CMS / blogging / commenting platform for their editors and staff. Refactoring legacy online patent and chemistry search tools, re-branding, web site UI development.

Front-end mobile portal development for Vodafone. The client (Vodafone) needed a portal-like branded entry site for their handsets. I worked initially on implementing the UE requirements and developing graphics, XHTML, JS, CSS and PHP for a few devices.Later work included extending this coverage to several hundred handsets by assessing their capabilities and developing the inheritence model and API. This work was carried out in parallel with editors still writing for the old system, so I also worked on adapting the Web-based widgets and content using XSLT and developing PHP (server-side) and AJAX import methods from XML. Targetted content was delivered to the devices by use of tools I wrote to identify them and generate Apache server rules. I also developed a suite of tools for on-device access, JS debugging and capability testing. Later work involved performance benchmarking and optimisation. The project was halted after two years by external issues.

Worked on an end-to-end (CMS-to-browser) Web delivery concept. This was a TDD project - I worked on the JS core MVC libraries, generating jQuery components, dealing with cross-browser issues, encoding, and implementing workarounds to live code issues. Some of the fixes were critical to timely launch with phased introduction. e.g: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/Assisted in implementing a new look for the Film4 sub-site at http://www.channel4.com/film/. This included XHTML/CSS2 layout and adding an AJAX summary mechanism for an existing comments application.Added AJAX to an internal application to speed editorial processes by eliminating server hits.A major branding clean-up affecting both the site and externally generated and hosted subsites. This involved auditing content and delivery methods, producing a set of guidelines for the business, developing new Web page components inclusion mechanisms, whilst retaining an existing layout.

I spent 5 months developing the front-end of a Web-based realtime trading application. This involved interfacing between the company's core trading application (developed in parallel) and the browser using jQuery to meet the UI requirements and enabling AJAX communications to the Perl-based back end services. Particularly challenging was achieving the design on Internet Explorer without changing the core client-side trading code, requiring a good understanding of the trading application's API, browser rendering, CSS standards, and jQuery. I also progressed the development of the architecture further to demonstrate the next-generation application, including a prototype using the Ext framework.

At the NZ Min. of Education: Assisted development of an SOA-based publication system using BEA Aqualogic Service Bus and WebLogic products. This included establishing a VM-based dev environment, rationalising an SQLServer data model, implementing data services and normalisation layers using xquery & UI development using UML Activity diagrams for a Struts-based JSP application.At Telecom NZ:Scoped, planned, implemented and launched a rebranded Vignette V6 Web site, using CSS and HTML generated from Tcl templates, on an existing CMS, technically leading a small team.Assisted in application development (based on the existing intranet platform), and built Perl-based site auditing and crawling tools for uploading content into the CMS. Also enhancements and optimisations to the the CMA and its publishing processes, internationalisation of the Web site, development of secure, extensible applications for extranet.

At NZ Telecom:Integrated my own menu system into their Internet and Intranet to replace a slower commercial product. Required professional knowledge of HTTP, proxying, browser rendering engines, DOM, Javascript, HTML and CSS.I was one of a small team delivering a major reband of the public site, which won awards: http://web.archive.org/web/20021031112333/http://www.netguide.co.nz/awards/2001/corporate.phpTechnical design, development and production of a youth-oriented site, within a tight timeframe. Implemented a mechanism to share pages across two Web sites, using standards-based CSS & templates.At the National Bank of New Zealand:Designed & built calculators which were XML-configured, implemented in Javascript & PerlScript on ASP (including obfuscation of client-side code).

Development for the ASB BANK Web site (www.asbbank.co.nz), including designing and implementing a retirement planning workbook involving porting server-side Perl to client-side Javascript, whilst maximising stability, security & compatibility.

Started in tech support. In that time I set up restoreable testbed machines. I dimly recall coming up with reusing the approach and having to implement it at midnight for a 'get 100 people to build their own web sites in real time' stand at a show which was to start THE NEXT DAY. Wrote daft HTML MacOS 'emulators' and taught myself HTML etc. Soon took up Web Support supporting Perl-based apps on subscribers sites, then spent a couple of years as a designer and developer, doing graphics, HTML and app coding for www.demon.net, learned a lot of Javascript.
