Ux Designer (Contract)

Brisbane, Australia

Clients: Hearis, Virgin Australia, Greater Group, Groundwork, Lord Mayor's Business Awards, Tatts Group, RSL Care, RACQ4impact is an Agile software development house. As their first, and main, UX Designer, I helped them adapt from backend integration type projects, to more user focused applications. We worked in small teams (4-8 people) with design and development happening in quick succession, which was only possible through our very high levels of communication, professionalism and ultimately trust.I frequently ran an 'envisioning workshop' at the start of the project which involves working with the team and the client for roughly half a day. This is a product planning workshop where we focus on defining the problem we're trying to solve and who we are solving it for. Once this is defined we generated ideas and solutions, then refined and prioritised based on how well they solve the chosen problem and aligned with the user and business goals.Armed with the output from the workshop, we would go into 2 week Agile sprints. My role varied from pure Designer to Designer + Product Manager, depending on the makeup of the team. We maintained high contact levels with the customer and constantly reprioritised and adapted functionality with them to ensure we were delivering the best value at that moment.I have yet to experience a client that was not delighted with the resulting solution. They are aware of progress at every stage and often we can deliver more than originally scoped.

Dec 2011 - Oct 2016

User Experience Designer (Contract)

Brisbane, Australia

Flight Centre is undertaking a considerable redesign of their flagship website. I'm redesigning part of the site working closely with other members of the design team.I conducted a competitor analysis to gauge current industry standards. I then sketched solutions and prototyped a preferred solution in Axure. The prototype will be be user tested and improvements fed back into the design.

Oct 2011 - Dec 2011

User Experience Consultant (Contract)

Melbourne, Australia

Clients: ANZI helped the team at HeathWallace create personas for ANZ's online offerings. The personas will be used to guide the design team when creating the next generation products and services.I helped conduct contextual interviews with people in their homes and places of business in order to understand their financial needs - a taboo and touchy topic for many so diplomacy was required at every turn. The personas were created from a considerable data set and finally presented to stakeholders and the internal design team in an interactive and engaging way.A year after producing the personas I found out they were still being used. It was a proud moment as many personas never get used at all.

Jul 2011 - Sep 2011

User Experience Designer (Contract)

Melbourne, Australia

Clients: Melbourne Business SchoolMelbourne Business School is committed to fostering learning beyond the classroom. This means building an ecosystem to allow learning on the job and from other people - when and where you need it most. I was part of the team that realised the successful solution. I worked closely with business stakeholders, other designers and the development team. We worked in an Agile environment to continuously produce a system the client could interact with and provide feedback on.This involved user interviews, prototyping, a lot of sketching, reviews with developers and many many whiteboard sessions.

Jan 2011 - Jun 2011

Senior Experience Consultant

Melbourne, Australia

Clients: Telstra, La Trobe University, eBay, IG MarketsAs a consultant you need to first help the client define their problem. Then you use a variety of techniques to prioritise requirements and test the boundaries of constraints. Through teamwork and workshops you then develop a solution that suits the clients needs – from blue sky inspirational designs to immediately buildable designs. At Symplicit I had the opportunity to live and breathe UX through solid and varied methodologies. There was numerous hours spend user testing, 1 on 1 interviews, prototyping, affinity diagraming, client workshops, client presentations and team brainstorming just to name a few.

Oct 2009 - Dec 2010

User Experience Designer

Melbourne, Australia

Clients: Sensis / Yellow PagesThe majority of my time at Sensis was spent working on two websites. The first site was yellowpages.com.au where I worked to introduce features to improve the user experience such as an auto-complete on the keyword field, logic to avoid disambiguation and zero result pages and map based search. Working on Yellow Pages requires constant consideration of the advertisers and Sensis’ commercial interests, all while trying to achieve an ideal user experience for the consumer. This required frequent consultation with various departments such as Product, Marketing, Legal, Production and IT/Development. The second key website I worked on was a pseudo-research project called Yellow Lab. The aim of Yellow Lab is to trial ideas in a smaller and more agile environment and deliver any successes into the main Yellow Pages website. From a user experience perspective, ideas such as tagging, recommendations, user profiles, user defined geographical searches, and more, are designed, user tested and trialled in a live environment to gather objective and subject data.

Aug 2007 - Oct 2009

Information Architect (Contract)

London, United Kingdom

Clients: Beko (UK)I had worked at Complete previously and was asked back to work on a new client. Complete was responsible for the entire online (and some offline) presence of BEKO UK. I was tasked with the redesign of the UK website. The aim of the site was not to increase sales, but to increase the awareness of BEKO, the second largest whitegoods retailer in the UK. This involved working extremely closely with the BEKO marketing team and the Complete team tasked with the branding. Personas and conceptual models were developed first so that the site’s objects were formalised. A sitemap and wireframes closely followed based on market research, personas and client objectives. Client meetings occurred at intervals in order to confirm that the client was pleased with the work and that the deliverables were on target.

Dec 2006 - May 2007

Information Architect (Contract)

London, United Kingdom

Clients: Rio TintoInteresource (now Made by Many) is a new media agency with a heavy focus on usability and accessibility. I was brought into the Information Architecture (IA) team to specifically work on the Rio Tinto project. My first assignment was to review the visual designs (from an external agency) against the wireframes for the new site and report back any inconsistencies. My next task was to create an IA for a new series of Rio Tinto Group Operations sites (i.e. a site for each major metal or mineral group within the company). The IA needed to be flexible to account for differences across the groups, but keep a similar feel to the parent site. Wireframes were also modified or created as required.

Sep 2006 - Nov 2006

Information Architect (Contract)

London, United Kingdom

Clients: T-Mobile, National RailThe particular team that I was involved with specialised in website design and creation. The team consisted primary of project managers, information architects (IAs) and visual designers. I was often the only IA on a project, but frequently consulted and brainstormed with other IAs and designers on my projects and theirs. Initial concepts for sites were storyboarded and an approach approved by the client. A sitemap and wireframes were then developed and brought to life by designers. An iterative process was used with client input to evolve the solution until sign-off was achieved. My time at Complete was spent almost entirely on the T-Mobile account, but some time was spent on user research and developing personas for a National Rail Journey Planner project.

Heuristic evaluations were performed for senior management across the Orange and Wanadoo websites in 4 countries. Research proposals were also developed to showcase Framfab’s new eye-tracking software. Storyboarding was also performed on a small blue-sky project involving community supplied content.

User Researcher (Contract)

Oyster/Framfab

London, United Kingdom

Clients: BT (British Telecom), Vodafone, Orange, Sony, SamsungOne of the specialised teams within Framfab (now LBi) was the User Research team, where I was employed. The primary duties of this team were to perform research into user requirements and conduct user testing sessions. Research and testing was usually performed on websites and mobile devices. Research into user requirements usually involved face to face interviews or questionnaires. User testing required experimental design, facilitating testing sessions while recording data, analysing the aggregated data and reporting the results.
