Manager, Writer, Editor And Internet ProducerThe Palm Beach Post Aug 1988 - Aug 2008• Features Special Projects Editor, 2004-2008: Manager, writer, editor and Internet producer in the 45-person Features and Entertainment Department of The Post, the daily newspaper in Palm Beach County, FL. As founding editor of the Florida Home section, I led a team of journalists and freelance contributors in the paper’s coverage of real estate, home interior and landscape design. I also conceived, planned and directed several large special-publication magazines on health and lifestyle topics. Both duties required extensive collaboration with writers, editors, photographers, advertising and marketing representatives, production personnel and other employees outside the features department, as well as with doctors, hospital administrators and patients, real estate agents, lawyers, homeowners and other members of the public. In addition to these two main duties, I conceived and created multimedia Flash presentations and video games for the paper's Web site as well as directed the site's features coverage. I also supervised the copy desk chief and two Web producers, edited feature stories and wrote a weekly humor column.• Assistant Features Editor, 1999-2004: Worked with the Features Editor to plan and direct the paper's four lifestyle sections and to supervise the department's 12 features reporters and 10 copy editors. Worked with reporters and other editors to generate story ideas and special projects and to get articles written and ready for publication. Wrote a weekly humor column called 'The Practical Man' and later a weekly Food column called 'Consuming Passions.' • Features Copy Desk Chief, 1996-1999: Supervised the department's 10-person production team, which proofread stories, wrote headlines and did pre-press production for six features sections. Also led the department’s transition to a digital production system. • News desk editor, 1988-1996: Edited stories, wrote headlines and designed pages for the paper's national and local news sections. -
Technical WriterPratt & Whitney 1993 - 1995While working nights full-time for The Post in 1989-93, I went to school during the day to get a degree in mechanical engineering. This resulted in the job with Pratt, in which I worked with engineers to create maintenance manuals for fighter-jet engines manufactured by Pratt and traveled to Air Force bases and manufacturing plants to field test those manuals. I continued to work part-time at night for the paper while I held this job and eventually returned to the paper full time when offered a promotion.
