Dr. Daniel B. Oerther is a professor of environmental health engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, a professor of nursing (by courtesy) at Duquesne University, and the executive director of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. Previously he served as professor and head of the department of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Cincinnati. A pioneer in convergence research, Dan is widely recognized for redefining environmental engineering as solving the problems of planetary health; partnering with disadvantaged communities to improve access to clean water, nutritious food, and financial security; and interprofessional education of the nurse+engineer to promote STEMpathy. A three-time Fulbright awardee and former Jefferson Science Fellow at the U.S. Department of State, Professor Oerther is a lifetime honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, a Diplomate Laureate of the American Academy of Sanitarians, and a proud Eagle Scout. Dan earned a B.A. in biology and a B.S. in environmental engineering from Northwestern University and a doctorate in environmental engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana. Established in 2014, Dusquesne University of the Holy Spirit is a private Catholic Research university and home to the first joint program of nursing and engineering leading to a baccalaureate of nursing plus a baccalaureate of biomedical engineering. My own personal interest includes extending praxis from the bedside and into the community where the nurse+engineer collaborates with sanitarians to promote wellness and ensure public environmental health of body, mind, and spirit.

Kappe Distinguished Lecturer
The Kappe Lecture Series was inaugurated by the Academy in 1989 to share the knowledge of today's practitioners with tomorrow's environmental engineers and scientists. It is an annually recurring series of lectures presented on approximately a dozen college campuses during the Fall academic term. The Academy's Awards Committee chooses lecturers from the practicing engineering community in the year preceding presentation of the lectures. This program was inspired by a grant from the estate of Stanley E. Kappe, P.E., DEE, who served as the Academy's Executive Director from 1971 to 1981.
