My work in this arena focuses on intercultural leadership development through facilitating integrated design development and implementation of schools and organizations, and through program creation promoting interculturally-skilled leadership grounded in global competencies. Key to this work is challenging long-held assumptions of what "school" is for and how it must be structured, calling attention to well-intended reform that squeezed it into structures that can't serve those intentions. This focus demands attention to the creation of equitable engagement for all students, and recognition of the assets each student brings to learning.

I am part of an incredible collaborative design and lead team which develops and promotes a new paradigm of global leadership. Key principles of this leadership are reflected in the "CO-" of our organization's name: compassion, community, cooperation, collaboration, contextualization, commitment, coordination... Our programs include an internship we facilitate with small teams of high school students and young adults throughout the world who work and study with global organizations dedicated to improving global conditions. In the process members of these teams learn about and develop skills for initiative and leadership driven by potent horizontal inclusiveness leading to positive changes needed for our times. CO-LEAD International is a tax exempt public charity organized under the IRS 501(c)(3) tax code.

I have written extensively on education for global competence. This includes plans and narratives regarding integrated organizational designs for schools that ultimately have been implemented and on strategies for organizational leadership. I have also contributed to the founding thought frameworks and policies for Co-Lead International, the non-profit organization I have co-founded (see elsewhere in my LinkedIn profile). My current blog series is on different facets of integrated school design, and these will ultimately expand and comprise a forthcoming book on this focus. My writing includes fiction that spotlights critical international and local human and humanitarian issues. I am currently working on a series of novels about the search for self-identity within circumstances that make the search agonizingly difficult.

Tremendous energy and resources are spent with best intentions for reforming and improving instruction and schools. But many strategies touted in our current educational realm are still built on old assumptions that are not relevant to what is needed today for students' equitable, effective, and efficient learning. My speaking engagements provide insight into what these assumptions are and how to find them. I challenge audiences to take their compassion for kids and learning into more expansive and systemic thinking about school redesign for the exponentially accelerating changes of our times.

I support the development of international studies schools in Denver Public Schools. In this role I led the design development of three schools of Denver Center for International Studies (DCIS), and continue to support the implementation of a deep international studies instructional framework for all four DCIS schools.

As a consultant in this national network of pre-collegiate international studies schools I collaborated on the development of an instructional framework through which teachers could deliver curriculum that would develop students' global competencies. In this role I served as an executive coach to school leaders in our Denver schools, and a liaison for central district administration to both these schools and the network leadership in New York.

Denver Center For International Studies

I facilitated the design development of four Denver Center for International Studies schools. I was the founding principal of the first one, a magnet school for students in grades 6-12. The other schools include another 6-12 secondary school and two elementary schools. They all are dedicated to developing globally competent young citizens who are actively engaged in our rapidly changing world.

I led the design and implemented this international studies magnet program for Denver Public Schools. The design of this program became the foundation of the four schools of Denver Center for International Studies, the design and development of which I facilitated.

I taught English language arts, English language acquisition, social studies, and student council at middle and high school levels. I also designed and helped facilitate teacher human relations workshops as a part of the district desegregation court order.

I served on a training staff for new Peace Corps Volunteers to Iran.

Afghanistan

I taught English as a second language to Afghan students in Jalalabad. I also served as a counterpart to an Afghan English teaching supervisor in Nangrahar Province.
