Main responsibilities:1. Leading the business strategy and serving as a marketing/commercial consultant to improve sales. 2. Structuring and seeking funding for our expansion plans.Milestones:1. Nov 2014: I created a concept that allows us to thrive by fighting inequality through responsible tourism. 2. Jan 2015: I found a co-founder who shares my mission and who complements my competencies, experience and knowledge at an utmost level.3. Mar 2015: we achieved the funding we needed to start by designing a holistic business plan and pitching it to potential investors.4. Jul 2015: we opened Volunteer Hostel Cartagena’s doors to our first guests.5. Nov 2015: we were finalists (10 out of 800 participant startups) in the Social Innovation category at the 2015 Ventures Contest (organized by McKinsey, Ashoka and others).6. Jan 2016: we achieved breakeven point on our 7th month of operation.7. Aug 2019: We had to close operation in Cartagena, due to a lack of scale to compete with both new multinational hostel chains and Airbnb, and high vulnerability to steep rent increases due to our premium location within the city center. Definitely an extraordinary experience full of lessons on entrepreneurship, social impact, tourism, real estate, leadership and resilience.
