Through the nonprofit Sympara, I help faith leaders and their neighbors bridge the sacred and the civic by reimagining underutilized religious properties for social impact.Through the brand and leadership consultancy Signal Hill, I advise leaders and organizations on how to close the distance between aspiration and action by challenging the status quo while encouraging practices that sustain change.Through the journalism venture Senior Correspondent, I collaborate with veteran journalists and older writers to bring all generations into a new story of our age.And as a CoGenerate Fellow, I advance a vision of intergenerational creation for individual and societal flourishing.In these vocational expressions, I innovate by stepping into the gaps. I go where opportunities are overlooked and assets are undervalued. While others avoid the gaps — fearing the foolishness and the risk of this space — I go there gladly because I see strength and possibility, and the chance for creativity. With hope and conviction, I step into the gaps and go "further up and further in," as the writer C.S. Lewis put it.I began my career as a community journalist, serving as city editor and acting editor for the Alameda Journal, then founding managing editor of the San Leandro Times. I'm still a journalist with an abiding curiosity about leadership, religion, aging, technology, and society; and my love of story has led to pioneering work in narrative marketing and the use of story-driven methods for organizational development, culture formation, and leadership formation.My strengths illuminate my vocation and the value I bring to organizations. Gallup's StrengthsFinder assessment identifies my top five strengths as: Strategic, Activator, Belief, Significance and Command.In Gallup's framing, I see alternative pathways; I translate vision into action; I pursue big social goals because of my convictions and desire for meaning; and I guide others by evoking their gifts and their longing for a better way. What I long for is the chance to catalyze creative leadership, leverage social capital, and maximize human potential, all for the common good. My hope is realized when I step into the gaps, discover opportunities, and find kindred spirits who also lead in between.
