I led the development team for the Data Ingest Service of the Human Cell Atlas Data Coordination Platform. The platform is a collaboration between teams at EMBL-EBI, The Broad Institute, UCSC, and The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. I work closely with the other groups to coordinate and prioritise efforts on what is a very fast-moving, technically challenging and rewarding project.The Data Ingest Service is a cloud-native architecture comprised of Docker-ised Python and Java microservices orchestrated with Kubernetes and running on Amazon Web Services (AWS). It provides a REST API and user interface designed to deal with the ingestion and validation of tens of petabytes of sequencing data, imaging data, metadata and analysis results generated by the Human Cell Atlas, a flagship global scientific collaboration.

I worked as part of a team of seven software engineers providing a searchable, multi-petabyte repository of nucleotide sequencing data, serving researchers worldwide. I was responsible for the development and maintenance of web-based data submission systems.Technologies used include Java, GWT, Spring, JSON, XML and Oracle. I pioneered the use of tools and technologies that subsequently became standardised throughout the team, including Spring Boot, Gradle, Git, Jenkins, Artifactory, SonarQube and Graylog.As a team, we also adopted many techniques I introduced to make code more sustainable and software delivery more effective. By focusing on code quality and automation we greatly reduced the time spent on maintenance and routine tasks. We became able to say ‘yes’ to more customer requests and better serve the community.In 2014 I started a campus Meetup group aimed at bringing software developers together to learn about tools, techniques and technologies and to raise the profile and sustainability of software development. In late 2015 this was adopted as the EBI Technical Seminars Programme with its own budget and by 2017 we had over 400 members. I was supported in organising talks and workshops from leaders in the software industry and enabled collaboration amongst developers across campus by creating communities of practice.

• In-house developer of an intranet portal for SJP’s 1,800 financial advisors, providing search and recommendation with support from a pool of outsourced developers and contractors.• Delivered an Ext-GWT and Java web application to enable the categorisation of documents.• Created a solution using Neo4j to create taxonomy to categorise documents, relate them and provide recommendations based on collective user activity.• When combined with Solr for full-text search and jQuery frontend this was an effective system that was greatly appreciated by financial advisors.• As one of the first commercial customers of Neo4j, worked with the team to trial live backups.

• Joined a pilot five-person agile team to develop a data collection system for government farm inspectors, running on early tablet PCs.• The system generated XForms from a database using an Apache Cocoon pipeline. These were then uploaded to the mobile device. On the device, an embedded web server managed offline interaction and serialised data to XML. XSL-FO was used to provide PDF output.• Led team of three that delivered a series of data migrations from legacy Environment Agency systems to the new IRAP service.• Provided technical consultancy to UKTI to enhance the workflow and performance of the Lotus Domino-based Overseas Market Introduction Service (OMIS) website.• Acted as technical consultant in the innovation team, researching and writing proposals and bids for a number of UK government projects. This repurposed existing software assets for other applications such as environmental health inspections.
