I went on my own for a bit and learned a ton. I learned the value of every moment in my day. I learned that to do freelance well, you have to hustle like crazy. Beyond that, I was thrown into the deep end with projects that were way bigger than me. I learned how to be ok with uncertainty and push through challenges. As an ECD I learned how to make process and systems that allow people to do great work. The highlight was challenging the design team to an "ugly poster design contest." They created really ugly work for real clients. This is the place that made my career. It wasn't all me though - I was surrounded by some of the most talented and uplifting people I've ever met. This was my favorite job of all time...nothing has come close. A couple of things I learned: 1) find a company that allows you to focus on your work. 2) Have fun doing the work. Life is too short and we work too much as it is. 3) As a creative, you're a business person. A professional. Which means you have to act like one. We did the LA adverting thing. The weather was great, but the economy wasn't. This was a short lived experience due to the recession during that time. Some highlights: I worked on ESPN and did a lot of great work, my boss was the guy who wrote the movie Old School, I ate some really great pizza, I got to skateboard and surf on my lunch breaks.

My first real job out of ad school.It was harder than I expected. The nights went late. The days went long. But I learned how to be a real art director and worked on giant companies like Hilton and Miller. I even did one of those "Doorbuster" ads for Sears. I remember sitting in the editing room thinking "The people are going to love this sale when they hear about it. This is so fun." I have no idea if the sale turned out to be a good one. My guess is that it did because Sears kept running sales every other weekend.

We've all been an intern somewhere. Mine was memorable. On my first day we went to a big advertising conference in downtown Chicago. I wore my favorite shirt (of the 3 shirts I owned) and wanted to impress my co-workers. But when I signed in to the conference I was so nervous that I typed my name wrong at the kiosk. As my name tag printed out I realized that I had typed "Dab" and not "Dan." Long story short, the entire year everyone called me Dab.
