I am an estate planning attorney in Minnetonka. I used to think estate planning was all about protecting and preserving assets, and that’s certainly a major part of it. But going through the loss of a loved one drastically changed my perspective.Should the worst happen, and your children are left without parents, who decides on their guardianship and the distribution of your assets for their care? Unfortunately, it may be left up to the state, if no will is in place. Even if you have a will, it can take months to process it through the courts. What happens to your children in the meantime? Who will care for them? Will there be funds available for them during that time?These are thoughts parents don’t like to think about, but these types of tragedies, where young children lose their parents, happen every day. When my wife was diagnosed with cancer, she was only the first of a number from our group of friends in the coming months, all 30-somethings with young children, to be diagnosed with terminal cancer. To this day, I am stunned by this. Of course, my own experience showed me that being relatively young and healthy is no guarantee of a long life or continued good health.The best time to plan for the future is now. I learned that the hard way. I’d love to meet you and journey with you through this process.My background: I graduated summa cum laude from Hamline University School of Law in 2003 where I was an editor of the Law Review. I also clerked for a judge in Dakota County and later worked at the head legal office at the Pentagon.After graduating, I clerked for the Minnesota Court of Appeals for a year, served a stint as a prosecutor, and entered private practice in 2005.
