Postdoctoral ResearcherUniversity Of North Carolina At Chapel Hill School Of Medicine May 2016 - Aug 2017Chapel Hill, Nc, UsThe primary project entails understanding the dissemination of Yersinia pestis after intradermal inoculation. The project focuses on determining which host factors affected the dissemination and which virulence factors were essential in establish colonization not only in the lymph node, but systemically as well.Additional projects include understanding how Klebsiella pneumonie regulated virulence in a murine pneumonia model. Highlights:• Devised new techniques to understand the impact of Klebsiella pneumoniae virulence regulators in vivo and in vitro including designing a multicolor FACS panel to phenotype immune response• Revitalized a project entailing the modeling of Yersinia pestis infection under high Biosafety conditions• Experience in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory operation and SOP adherence• Established protocols for immunophenotyping and cellular depletion for use in BSL-3• Secured select agent approval and Federal background check clearance• Routinely presented immunology experimental data and journal articles to non-immunologists -
Graduate Research AssistantTulane University School Of Medicine May 2011 - Apr 2016New Orleans, Louisiana, UsCharacterized antigen-specific CD4+ T cell responses to parenteral immunization using detoxified ETEC Heat-Labile toxin (dmLT). This included monitoring antigen-specific T cell trafficking to lymphoid and mucosal tissue in addition to determining effector phenotype and memory formation. Additionally, the project entailed elucidating which subsets of dermal dendritic participate in early and late major histocompatibility class II presentation to naïve CD4+ T cells in draining lymph nodes. Other research projects included identifying participating antigen-presenting cells during persistent Salmonella typhimurium infection in a murine model. Lastly, a separate project was conducted to determine the impact of skin mast cell activation on antigen-specific CD4+ T cell expansion and phenotype.Highlights:• Determined how specific vaccination formulations and route impacts the adaptive T cell response in terms of distal responses to mucosal tissue compartments • Pioneered tissue separation assay using magnetic separation and optimized FACS staining protocol that lead to lab standard operating procedure• Developed and managed a research project that secured 300,000 dollars a year in NIH (U01) funding and a separate project that resulted in 250,000 dollars a year in NIH (R01) funding• Trained numerous users for independent usage of the Microbiology core equipment including flow cytometry equipment• Devised assay for separating and assessing rare dendritic cell antigen presentation using a novel reagent• Designed and purified reagents as essential tools for studying the T cell immune response• Mentored and trained numerous Master’s and rotation students to perform lab techniques independently -
Research TechnicianUniversity Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine Apr 2007 - Jul 2010Pittsburgh, Pa, UsServed as a conductor of experiments and data analyst in two separate projects: 1) Understanding the impact of neutrophil-sourced metallomatrix protein 8’s impact on survival and severity of peritoneal sepsis, 2) Determining the impact of systemic sepsis on atherosclerotic lesions.Additionally, assisted on a clinical study entailing discovering the mechanism of activated leukocyte removal on human sepsis outcomes. Highlights:• Worked under limited supervision to generate and analyze data for acute lung injury model and a sepsis model that fostered two co-authored publications and steered advisor to his first federal funding award• Worked in team clinical research project analyzing human septic blood that led to a co-authored publication• Established and maintained an organized cell culture facility and developed an ordering database for supply acquisition• Assisted other investigators with technical guidance and executing animal work to complete their research projects
