Have you ever stopped to listen, really listen, to the environment around you?I have always thought I have a keen ear for sounds but it was not until I started practicing professionally as an acoustics engineer that I realized the importance of sound in our daily life. Hearing is a sense that we cannot simply shut down, we are always hearing the sounds around us (even when we are sleeping!) and that is why I believe in the importance of good acoustic design and engineering in our cities.A love for music at an early age and a professional education in Electronic Engineering led me to pursue a Master's Degree in Audio and Acoustics and Sustainable Design, which became a solid foundation for developing consulting skills in the built environment at Arup in Sydney. I quickly learned that acoustics goes beyond the majestic opera houses and concert halls, it touches every aspect of our lives from the buildings that we live in, to the infrastructure that connects us. On a personal level, I learned acoustics influence our mood, health, well-being, and even the way we interact with each other.Beyond the professional environment, I am also a keen programmer and have recently been exploring ways to integrate acoustic modeling and experiencing into virtual reality platforms. I find it very powerful to be able to experience acoustics in an immersive environment; with current trends in technology, the tools are right at our fingertips.I am always happy for a chat about the work we do at Arup in the cities and infrastructure sectors, as well as the work we do in acoustics, AV, and theatre/venue consulting.
