I manage a dedicated staff of over 40 Park Rangers, Craft Specialists, Gardeners, and seasonal Field Staff that provide excellent stewardship and customer service at 10 regional parks in the Richmond/Berkeley/Oakland Hills. My span of control includes 7 Supervisory staff and an annual operating budget of $5 million. I have direct responsibility for maintaining safe, clean, high-quality park and recreation facilities, including RV and primitive campgrounds, picnic areas, the Lake Anza Swim Complex, an extensive botanic garden of California native plants, and several hundred miles of unpaved and paved trails. I oversee management of plant, wildlife and historic resources on over 11,000 acres of developed and undeveloped park areas, in a diverse setting that includes oak/bay, redwood, pine and eucalyptus forests, open grassland and shrub land. I oversee concessionaire operations for the Tilden Park Golf Course, Piedmont Horse Stables, Chabot Equestrian Center, Skyline Stables, the Redwood Valley (scale model) Railway, the Golden Gate Live Steamers, the Tilden Park Carousel, and four cattle grazing lessees.I maintain close and cooperative working relationships with Park Police, Fire Department and Maintenance and Skilled Trades staff, to ensure there is effective law enforcement, fire prevention, emergency response and functional park facilities for our park visitors.
