I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I knew it would involve a lot of math. It always fascinated me that you could solve real-world problems by abstracting them into numbers and equations on paper. While working towards my degree in applied mathematics at UC Davis, the math I was learning got more and more complicated and I started writing software models to solve these increasingly complex problems. This is when I fell in love with computer science and decided to add a minor in the field. During university, I interned at the DKIST observatory in Hawaii where I worked on mathematical software models using MATLAB which measured physical vibrations through the telescope structure using fast fourier transforms (FFTs) and other digital signal processing (DSP) techniques. This work played a critical role in the success of the telescope by providing the tools to find and mitigate sources of vibrational interference on the mirror mount assembly. After I graduated, I was hired as a software engineer at Google. At Google, I learned how to write software at scale. I worked through the ins and outs of the software development lifecycle, from design to launch while following industry best practices. After being promoted, I became a TL and took on additional responsibilities as a mentor and educator. After five years, I left Google and am now looking forward to the next chapter in my career. In my free time, I enjoy learning and traveling. For the past two years, I’ve been taking watchmaking classes where I’ve been disassembling and repairing mechanical watch movements. When traveling, I love visiting Latin America where I get to experience different cultures and practice my Spanish (I’m currently a B2 intermediate-level Spanish speaker).
