Linux AdministratorBrightpoint Jul 2012 - Nov 2012This position was a three (3) month contract that was extended for staff augmentation. This position was to fill in between the leaving administrator and the hiring of the new Linux administrators. The environment was to support and maintain about 150 Linux servers both SuSE and RedHat. Of these servers about 15% were physical and the rest were virtualized in four (4) VMware Clusters. Most of the physical servers were Oracle database environment (Stand-alone, RAC, Data Guard). About 50% of their servers required PCI and SOX auditing. When I started, all the Linux servers were manually managed. This meant to create a login, one would have to login to each server and execute the needed commands. The server had never been patched after they were created. I performed two major projects during my time at BrightPoint. One project was to create a centralized patching repository for all the version of Linux. The other was working with the incoming administrators to in install a centralized management environment. Some of my other tasks included doing root cause analysis on outages and taking corrective measures. I also worked with the Compliance department several time in creating audit scripts and reports that would extract needed information for all servers to support both internal and external audits. There was always the need to work with the internal department for tuning and troubleshooting of their applications that ran on many of the Linux Servers.

PresidentEnterprise Services Management, Inc. 1995 - 1998Enterprise Management Service was involved in three major fields of computer technology today: Enterprise Management is a field which works with the management of local and remote computer systems (Servers, Workstations, and printing devices). The management of these systems range from alerting of a failure to the pre-failure diagnostics and notification. This allows either System Administrators or Expert systems to repair the problem before the users on the systems even know there was a problem. Management of the Enterprise also deals with the control of processes running in the systems; Financial processing, Backups, Archiving, uses of the Internet and many other business required processes. Network Support involves the installation and support of networking systems. Both Novell and Microsoft Networks have their advantages and disadvantages. Enterprise Management Services helps customers to best decide which system best fits their business needs. After the decision has been made, Enterprise Management Services assists the customer in the installation and training of the users and support staff on the equipment the business has purchased. Migration Support is working with companies to help them achieve their long range goals. Some of the more typical discussions concern how or why a company should move to a newer platform. Enterprise Management Services works with Novell and Microsoft to understand the emerging technologies. Enterprise Management Services has also worked with both Microsoft and Novell in many product developments, as a participant in beta programs that each of these companies have sponsored.

Manager Of Enterprise Networking ServicesAuto Source, Inc. 1991 - 1995Responsible for ensuring that the Information Services department of the Corporate Office was operating in an efficient and cost-effective manner, this included the administration of the Information Services operational budget in excess of two million dollars each fiscal year. The budget included IS expenditures for communications (both voice and data), maintenance of equipment, software requirements (licenses, contracts, new purchases, and any development requirements), and payroll requirements for the support staff of 9 full time associates. As part of the systems development and corporate planning strategy, was responsible for design and implementation of a disaster recovery site to protect all of the corporate data. The functionality of the disaster recovery site was transparent to the day-to-day operations for all the corporate and store users of the systems. In the case of an emergency the maximum data loss would be only two hours of financial records and four hours on user files. The recovery site was designed to support all departments for up to six months. With a limited support staff and a fully implemented Client/Server architecture a centralized support strategy was designed and implemented. This central support center supported both Operating Systems and end user applications: Point of sale, Work order and scheduling for service area, Payroll, and the standard business applications on a 7 day by 18 hours support schedule. The support center also supplied 24 hour support for all corporate and Store processing, along with the communication requirements for this processing. During the standard business hours' support was done from the corporate offices, after this the support was done from the support staffs home computer systems. With all of these options the support center and the computer systems in use achieved a 98+ % up-time status. This up-time percentage was a requirement because of the link to the systems and the sales achieved at each store.

This system was integrated into the SBT Accounting system. In addition to responsibilities for the tracking system, other responsibilities included supervision of the computer operations of the typesetting department and the implementation of enhanced Desktop Publishing using both Window and Macintosh computers. Initial evaluations of the typesetting department revealed that two typesetters were utilizing 12 different software application packages and yielding poor quality and quantity production. Following successful training to address problems in quality, a training and software package was developed to reduce the number of software packages being used to three applications. After reducing the applications count and conducting required training, production levels were determined to have dramatically improved, thus production was above the level that was considered acceptable for the typesetting department. Student & Support Tech.Isu 1981 - 1985The foundation for valuable knowledge of computer was formed while working at ISU's Computer Center and attending classes in the Electronics Department. Interests in robotics lead to work with Dr. Larry Heath, a professor in ISU's electronics department, on a textbook regarding robotics. I Assisted, Dr. Heath, in the development and creation of labs and experiments for his text book, “Fundamentals of Robotics”. Labs ranged from closing relays through computer interfaces to building hardware and software which would allow a robot to play an interactive game of tic-tac-toe. These involvements with robotics lead to a term serving as the local President of the National Organization of Robotics International. Employment with the ISU Computer Center came after the completion of two years of undergraduate studies. Was able to utilize knowledge of electronics to troubleshoot and repair computer equipment used throughout the ISU campus. During this time the campus was upgrading to PC computing. As the concept of PC's developed, the need for standalone PC's soon became secondary to the need for Local Area Networking. With my involvement in the evaluation and setup of the various networking environments, it lead to myself managing and supporting of the campus's first Novell network for over two years. The network supplied access for over 400 students to Dbase III, Lotus 123, and a host of word processors. This network evolved to include fiber segments, adding access to remote PC clusters.
