About Daniel Henning

I am a Technical Director and Software Engineer with a career spanning over a decade having experience in web development, software application engineering, and quality assurance, having worked at companies big and small such as Grooveshark, Penthouse, and SoundHound. I have made many client companies happy with my work, such as Samsung, Microsoft, Westfield, Facebook, Twitter, Anheuser-Busch, SFMOMA, Pinterest, VISA, SAP, Honda Center, and the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee. I have been interested in software development for many years ranging from full-stack web application/server development, Front-end UI development, video game design and development, digital audio processing and augmentation, desktop/mobile application development, and VR/AR. I also love to consume and read O’Reilly, Apress, and other technical resources as much as most people like to eat food. These days I am most interested in UI architectures and in particular mixing things like Javascript in interesting ways (embedded in or interacting with non-standard web scenarios/devices/services) and modern frontends, both for web but also beyond.

Listed skills include Javascript, Mysql, Python, Jquery, and 46 others.

Britelite Immersive is a Creative Technology agency that places people and brands at the center of content-driven experiences. We specialize in building interactive installations, immersive environments, emerging technology campaigns, mixed reality experiences, and large-scale digital activations. How we play: interactive installations, product launches, experiential branding campaigns, corporate events, web/mobile development, game launches. What we do: creative direction, immersive projection, video mapping, multi-touch design, video production, webcasting, reactive display, social engagement.I was hired as a generalist software engineer using my toolbox of various skills for a variety of creative brand solutions, but also having a primary focus on creating interactive installations and video display solutions powered by web technologies. I have created reactive applications for large resolution touch walls, video stiches, and mobile devices using html/css/js as well as leveraging my modern Front-End Engineering skills like using React.js w/ Redux and Node.js. I have also helped with bridging the gap between other proprietary technologies and web technologies, like leveraging Python scripting in TouchDesigner apps, as well as communication layers between Web-exported Unity games and the browser environment they are embedded in. SoundHound Inc. are an innovator in Sound Recognition and Search technologies with a portfolio of technologies including audio identification, speech recognition, natural language understanding, and singing/humming search, deployed globally through app stores as well as partnerships with device manufacturers and automotive.Hired as a web swiss army knife, I mainly focused on creating experiences in the mobile app that were not native, using web technologies within embedded webviews in the iOS and Android apps. I worked closely with the iOS/Android developers to collaborate on the exposed APIs in JavaScript that I could make use of within my webviews to trigger app-specific actions (like launching media in our custom player instead of your system default), as well as create seamless transitions (and analytics flow) from native app page, into loaded webview, and then back out again into the native app. I also worked very hard with the app designers to recreate many of the styles/animations/look-and-feel from the native pages within the webviews with html/js/css, to ensure the users didn’t ever notice what was a native page and what was a webview. I also had to work within the performance and capability constraints of whatever webview the native app developers were embedding (as they were not entirely like mobile browser capabilities installed on the user’s device). Among other things, I also implemented a redesign of the corporate site, assisted the CEO with web prototypes for important company demos, implemented third party ad creatives including stacks that powered our annual real-time rundown of both the Super Bowl and Grammys, and worked on creating internal toolsets for employee processes using javascript stacks like AngularJS, Node.js + Express, and React.js, including a curator tool that would allow non-technical team members to populate pre-built campaign experiences I had made. I also assisted with an image processing pipeline made in Python and OpenCV.

The team was a collaboration of IT experts and business managers who specialize in investigative research, intellectual property rights, and market trends. They report data via human means but utilize a number of in-house tools and automated functionality to allow their human analysts to collect and manage the data and workload more efficiently. These tools and services were built with Python server side code, as well as the large web interface, which all the analysts used, built using the Pylons web framework. I started out as a Python programmer writing web applications to build into these services, working on server-side Pylons controllers, model code for utilizing our MySQL database with the SQLAlchemy ORM, and writing dhtml/css and javascript to be used in Mako templates which were served by the Pylons paster server.

PHP, MySQLGrooveshark was the world's largest on-demand and music discovery service. With over 15 million songs, Grooveshark was an ecosystem that brought together music fans, bands, music labels, and brands.I worked with Senior Web Developer Skyler Slade (whom I also worked with on 138fx) and we wrote the PHP/MySQL backend for the initial Grooveshark product. We brought the framework we had worked on with 138fx and modified the classes, session manager, mysql objects, etc to suit the project and eventually it became an enormous beast on its own. We engineered backend procedures that fetched and inserted information from MySQL database information to be utilized in front-end web development (consisting of much jQuery javascript and actionscript) and rendered for the web browser using Smarty PHP Templates. We wrote scripts that manipulated and maintained the MySQL database, as well as replication of data across servers. I had joined the project nearly at its inception and helped get the project off the ground and running within a year and a half wearing many hats, though my primary responsibilities were as a developer.

Django, MySQLPrior to LinkedIn’s dominance, this site was a prototype community/social network for entrepreneurs and web ventures. It was to allow entrepreneurs of startups and others interested in startups to promote themselves as well as join and become informed of other startups that are happening. I was hired to be a Django web developer but I also became involved with the actual design of the product, its unique features, and its user interface design. Eventually LinkedIn grew to dominate this area and utilized the same unique features we were coming up with, so this project was left and we went our separate ways.

PHP, MySQLPrior to Youtube’s arrival, this hobby site was a community/social network built in PHP/MySQL for independent video from filmmakers and film audiences. Unlike other video sites at the time, membership was free and uploading content was free. Also instead of using web video codecs like Quicktime, WMV, or Realplayer embedded content, all video on the site was presented in Macromedia Flash, which was browser friendly, lightweight, and cross platform. Using IMDB style credits, people could claim credit on videos they made, as well as rate videos and network with films and filmmakers. Youtube’s arrival effectively killed the project.
