I am a final year EPSRC funded PhD candidate at the Centre for Doctoral Training in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Leeds. My PhD project is highly multi-disciplinary, and as such my knowledge spans a wide range of topics and techniques from materials chemistry and mechanical engineering to stem cell biology and neuroscience. During my studies I have also held visiting researcher positions at the University of Otago in New Zealand and Osaka University in Japan, and continue to participate in collaborative research with each hosting research group.Around my PhD studies I also maintain a part-time job at Don Whitley Scientific Ltd, where I work in an advisory role. As part of this role I am involved in or personally responsible for a diverse range of projects.In my spare time I play rugby union at Old Grovians RUFC, where I have also previously held coaching roles.

Research project involved initially learning how to use an organic hydrogel system developed in the Matsusaki Lab for 3D printing applications and the formation of capillary networks. The second phase of the project involved the addition of neuronal cell lines to form dual capillary and neuronal networks, contributing to an ongoing project in the Matsusaki Lab that aimed to model the Blood-Brain-Barrier (BBB). As well as the contribution to the research project in the Matsusaki Lab, I was tasked with establishing the learned hydrogel system in my home lab in Leeds. -
Visiting ResearcherUniversity Of Otago Jul 2016 - Dec 2016Christchurch, New ZealandFunded through the SkelGEN grant scheme, this secondment was to the Christchurch Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering (CReaTE) Group. This secondment involved the optimisation of a Gelatin-Norbornene hydrogel for use in my PhD research project. More importantly, it also involved the use of a visible light initiation system that had been patented by the CReaTE group and was thus commercially sensitive. After completion of my research project, I was tasked to establish the use of the whole hydrogel and initiation system at my home lab in Leeds, through a Materials Transfer Agreement. -
