CurrentMCM is a German brand of leather products founded in 1976 in Munich, Germany. The brand's MCM logo, named Visetos, appears on many of its products. MCM sells its products through wholesale accounts, franchises and directly-operated stores. The company designed expensive leather suitcases and handbags which became popular during the 1980s. In 2005, the worldwide rights to the MCM brand were acquired by Sungjoo Group, a South Korean retail business founded by Sung-Joo Kim. MCM was re-launched in 2006 with a new flagship store in Berlin and appointed German designer Michael Michalsky as MCM’s creative director. MCM thereafter re-opened stores in New York, Paris, London, Singapore, Tokyo and China among others. MCM has collaborated with many contemporary artists and designers such as Craig Redman, Craig & Karl, Joy Gryson, and most lately will.I.am. MCM products are sold in department stores (e.g. Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, Selfridges, Galeries Lafayette, Printemps and Lotte). Today, MCM products are primarily available through wholesale accounts, franchise partnerships and directly-operated stores. These boutiques are found in upscale shopping districts, inside luxury department stores or at major international airports. Sungjoo Group is privately held and grows as a solid fashion conglomerate with brands such as MCM and Marks & Spencer in Korea.
