The Office of Research Reporting and Analysis (ORRA) is part of the Office of Extramural Research (OER) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). As Associate Director, Systems Integration, I support the management of reporting tools used for program management and analysis by NIH staff and members of the public (including NIH RePORT and RePORTER) and coordinate Policy implementation plans.

Within the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER), the Division of Data Systems and Data Quality (DDSDQ) develops tools to support evidence-based program and policy decisions across the NIH research enterprise. As a Health Science Analyst at DDSDQ, I assisted with the development of databases and tools to support portfolio analysis, program monitoring and evaluation, and policy analysis.

Within NINR's Division of Science Policy and Public Liaison (DSPPL), the Office of Science Policy and Legislation (OSPL) supports NINR by communicating scientific advances of NINR-supported research and by advising senior leadership on policies and legislative activities relevant to NINR's goals. As a AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at OSPL, my responsibilities included activities related to: scientific program planning; portfolio analysis; reporting; legislative issues; and, communication of scientific findings or policies to diverse audiences.

Within the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER), the Office of Data Analysis Tools and Systems (DATA Systems) develops tools to support evidence-based program and policy decisions across the NIH research enterprise. As a detailee at DATA Systems, I lent my expertise in planning and analyzing NIH research programs to build better solutions to assess the impact of federal investments in biomedical research. My responsibilities included: assisting with the development of databases and tools to support portfolio analysis, program monitoring and evaluation, and policy analysis; making recommendations on new or enhanced NIH data reporting and analysis capabilities; assessing quality and performance of new and existing tools; and, making recommendations for improvements.

Studied the biological barriers to HIV infection using tissue explant models and fluorescent imaging techniques. Presented complex scientific information to scientific and non-scientific audiences in presentations to groups of scientists and trainees. Mentored and trained B.S. and Ph.D. students in scientific and technical issues related to cell biology, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent imaging, research design, and data analysis.

Planned, designed, conducted, and managed research projects to characterize the role of the ubiquitin-proteasome system in rhTRIM5α restriction of HIV-1. Used methods such as cloning, quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, and deconvolution microscopy of fixed and live cells. Presented complex scientific information to scientific and non-scientific audiences in peer-reviewed publications, scientific conference presentations, and presentations to groups of scientists and trainees. Mentored and trained B.S. and Ph.D. students in scientific and technical issues related to cell biology, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent imaging, research design, and data analysis.Awarded third place for Basic Science Research at Sixth Annual Lewis Landsberg Research Day poster competition: “The role of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway in rhTRIM5α restriction of HIV-1” (April 2010).

Explored the function and localization of the DISC1 protein implicated in schizophrenia; analyzed the localization of DISC1 by immunofluorescence and characterized the interaction of DISC1 with other cellular proteins.

Investigated effect of painfully loud noise on activity of Type II spiral ganglion neurons, and importance of Type II spiral ganglion neurons in painful noise perception; characterized TRPA1 in vivo.

Wrote short blog posts to provide accessible and interesting coverage of science research for non-expert audiences. Maintained up-to-date knowledge of science news covering a wide variety of topics in multiple scientific disciplines currently being discussed in the media.

As an undergraduate, worked under supervision of principal investigator Daryl Davies. Performed electrophysiological characterization of Xenopus oocytes expressing hPepT1 or GlyR in dose-response, proton-dependence, and ethanol-inhibition experiments. Analyzed data in Clampfit and GraphPad Prism comparing results on traditional benchtop setup vs. high-throughput OpusXpress.Received competitive stipend. Awarded second place in the Life Sciences category at the Seventh Annual Undergraduate Symposium for Scholarly and Creative Work for presentation of poster: "Application of New High-Throughput System to Study hPepT1 and Screen Compounds" (May 2005). Wrote and defended Biology Honors Thesis on research through the Undergraduate Research Program (May 2006).

Responsible for promoting publication, advertising for submission deadlines, recruiting staff, organizing staff meetings, coordinating selection of writing and art to be published, fundraising to cover publication costs, designing publication using Adobe InDesign, working with publisher to prepare publication for press, selling publication, developing and maintaining website, and planning events to promote release of publication.
