A large, public R1 institution, the University of Arizona is a powerhouse of science and innovation. Having participated in almost every NASA mission, we are one of the world's foremost institutions pushing boundaries in space exploration and astronomy. Our faculty and students build the world's largest telescope mirrors, they land robots on Mars, bring back samples from asteroids and engineer mosquitoes so they can't spread Malaria. Most research is published in scientific journals read by a few experts in the field. But buried in the notebooks sitting on every lab bench, behind computer screens and tucked away under sophisticated machines are stories waiting to be told. I tell those stories. What I do:Translate research into engaging, interesting and relevant stories for non-technical audiences; highlight fascinating aspects of scientific research happening across campus; report on new study results and publications in a wide variety of sciences including astronomy and planetary science, physics, ecology and evolutionary biology, sustainability and climate change; cover research in the University's Biosphere 2 and BIO5 Institute, Institute of the Environment and other units; generate national and international media interest and high-profile media exposure for research at the University of Arizona; serve as a spokesperson for public inquiries and media requests; take advantage of social media and online platforms to generate and maintain interest in the University's broad spectrum of scientific endeavors.

Translated technical research into engaging articles, web specials and press releases for a lay audience and the news media; identified interesting story angles and newsworthy research results; promoted the Institute's research locally, statewide and nationally.

Oversaw the institute's website relaunch, developed online features highlighting the institute's numerous scientific departments in a way that is accessible and interesting to the lay public. Developed and produced a quarterly alumni newsletter in English.Managed requests from news media and facilitated interviews with scientists.Wrote press releases and articles for the center's popular science magazine, "einblick" ("insight").Translated complex biomedical science into easy-to-grasp and intuitive pieces explaining the relevance of basic cancer research at Germany's largest public health research institution; wrote press releases about new findings and publications; produced lay-friendly summaries for each of the research groups' web presence; worked with faculty members on ways to present their projects in an accessible and engaging format; developed a journalistic format for a quarterly newsletter for Cancer Center alumni living and working all over the globe.
