Chief Technology OfficerRoblox Jan 2020 - May 2024San Mateo, California, UsI manage and support Roblox’s diverse blend of engineering teams. Roblox engineering is now over 1000 strong and has incredible technical breadth. To name just a few areas: rendering and physics simulation in our core engine; moderation and filtering technology to keep our users safe and our experiences civil; information security; building and managing our on-line economy; tools to enable any curious creator to bring their ideas to life on the platform; and building out our own internal cloud infrastructure to support millions of autoscaling, auto-managed experiences. -
Senior Vice President Of Engineering & SupportCloudera Jun 2015 - Jan 2019Santa Clara, California, UsAs the leader of the 600+ person engineering and support team, I was responsible for all software development and customer support of Cloudera’s products. Instituted data-driven practices to deeply understand product component usage and revenue attribution.• Built a cloud product team to lead Cloudera’s move into the cloud. This team built and managed Cloudera’s first SaaS offerings. • Set Cloudera’s engineering site strategy, building a 100+ engineering organization in Budapest, Hungary and 30+ in Austin, TX. Beyond recruiting this required establishing strong leadership and site missions.• Partnered across the executive team to drive a rework in eng recruiting (HR), compensation benchmarking (HR), data science (IT/Finance), video/tele- conferenceing (IT/Finance), M&A (Strategy), and all-hands Q&A (all).• Executive sponsor for Cloudera’s diversity and inclusion programs. Vice President Of EngineeringGoogle Oct 2014 - May 2015Mountain View, Ca, UsGoogle runs one of the largest fleets of computers in the world. My team was responsible for enabling users to efficiently exploit the power of this fleet. For external customers, this was via Google Cloud Platforms’ engines for applications, VMs and containers; for internal customers such as search, ads, Gmail it was through the internal "Borg". Accomplishments for the 450+ person team included:• Shifting team focus from internal-facing systems to external-facing products.• Launching the Kubernetes open-source project, a ground-breaking project for container orchestration.• Defining and executing on key product differentiators such as transparent VM-migration and custom machine types. -
Engineering DirectorGoogle Apr 2007 - Oct 2014Mountain View, Ca, UsOne of a small number of directors responsible for growing Google’s New York office into the largest outside the Bay Area. My role was to build a systems team spanning projects in storage, cluster computing, networking, and search. Grew this team to over 100 as the first sizable team working on Google’s systems infrastructure outside CA. -
DirectorIbm 2003 - 2007Armonk, New York, Ny, UsLed multiple software development teams at IBM, ranging in size from 20 to 600. Key accomplishments included:• Leading software development for new releases of IBM’s DB2 relational database products for Linux, Windows, and Unix. Transformed the 600+ person DB2 engineering organization from a classic waterfall development method to one based on agile methods, continuous quality metrics, and leveraging of a global workforce. • Drove concept, strategy and architecture for DB2 Data Warehouse Edition 9.1, a revamp of IBM’s data warehousing tools. Research Staff MemberIbm 1996 - 2003Armonk, New York, Ny, UsMy research focused on distributed systems at a time when the Internet and applications of distributed computing were exploding. Extensive work in distributed messaging systems led to outcomes such as the first real-time scoreboard web apps for the Olympics, US Tennis Open, and Ryder Cup. This work influenced what became the Java Messaging Service standard. Work in fault-tolerance and distributed resource management were precursors to today’s cloud computing environments.
