At Seagreen Bio I carried out various tasks as a laboratory assistant. I was primarily working with extraction of essential oils from Atlantic seaweed. This extraction was achieved using Soxhlet extraction apparatus. I also had to maintain and clean these extractors. In addition to this I also had to carry out some quality control tests on various product materials, an example of such included determination of colony forming units (CFUs) resulting from microbial analysis.

I attained a great understanding of the inner workings of an ion chromatograph and became adept at related troubleshooting/maintenance. I also developed and modified chromatographic methods for the determination of analytes in novel/experimental samples (for example, uronic acids in seaweed extracts/hydrolysates). Show less
