I have over 10 years experience in the telecommunications industry as a Software Developer, Development Lead, Architect and Engineering Manager. I am a huge believer that working with users to build the right software and technology solution can solve even the toughest problems and I am a huge proponent of using software automation and orchestration to ensure repeatable and working software in that Agile environment. The complexities of the telecommunications industry provided me the background to mature the strong software engineering and management skills needed to deliver a history of measurable improvements in the software I design and develop.

Software Engineering Manager (Area Manager Member Of Technical Staff)At&T Oct 2019 - Apr 2021Dallas, Tx, UsNetgraphSummary: Team Lead for the Netgraph component of ECOMP that provides a graph visualization front end for viewing AT&T's networks.- As team lead oversaw agile team that delivered operations focused tool to provide horizontal and vertical topology in Cytoscape.js to virtual services that previously were only viewable across several textual systems and in REST APIs.- As co-inventor worked to design and document five patent submissions.- As Architect defined domain model of network based services to enable meta-model based capabilities in and across disparate use cases using graphson.- As developer implemented Glowroot application performance monitoring (APM) for Netgraph, reducing the need for log storage and reducing splunk log retention time. Aggregation of application performance from multiple containers allowing single pane of glass for two dozen containers.Outcome: Successfully deployed microservice to production that delivered several use cases that reduced time for discovery and location of service path data during outage scenarios from 45 minutes to less than 3 minutes.Gateway2Summary: Team Lead for the Gateway2 application that provides the authentication and policy management for the AT&T DSL and U-verse consumer broadband networks with a load of 500-800 Million requests a year.- As designer laid out roadmap for the plan to move from legacy Solaris Unix hardware to VM based Linux and finally to PaaS on Microsoft Azure. This included technology replacement like Artix to Spring Boot and flat file to Oracle Database. This reduces AT&T's cost for supporting legacy hardware from ~75 to 0 by end of year 2020.- As team lead led the evaluation of the migration path needed to be cloud native. After evaluating and prototyping solutions chose containers on Azure Kubernetes Service for the Spring Boot application layer, Azure Database for MySQL to replace the Oracle RAC database layer and the Azure Load Balancer for the NGINX load balancer layer. -
Software Engineering Manager (Area Manager Member Of Technical Staff)At&T Jan 2018 - Sep 2019Dallas, Tx, UsEnhanced Control, Orchestration, Management & Policy (ECOMP)Summary- Architect for SDN-X components of ECOMP that provide provisioning and configuration for AT&T's software defined network- Test Lead for the Automated System Testing of all service delivery applications. By combining all automation into a central library, increased reuse of testing by ~80% and reduce cycle time of post development from 4.5 months to 1.5 Months on average.- Implementer of CI/CD based regression test automation. Using Jenkins, Docker, Robot Framework and Selenium delivered an automation solution that runs several dozen existing test cases automatically after deployments to do regression and sanity testing. This reduced smoke testing from one week to ~45 minutes.Outcome: Delivered savings of ~$1.4 million annually by reducing manual work and centralizing testing.Software Defined Network – GUI Portal (SDN-GP)Summary: Team Lead for the SDN-GP component of ECOMP that provides front end for managing AT&T's Virtual Edge.- As team lead oversaw the containerization and deployment to Kubernetes of the SDN-GP Microservices. Outcome: Successfully deployed microservices delivering operations savings allowing reduction of operation resources from 3 to ~1.5. -
Software Engineering Manager (Associate Director - Technology)At&T Sep 2017 - Dec 2017Dallas, Tx, UsSoftware Defined Network – GUI Portal (SDN-GP)Summary: Team Lead for the SDN-GP component of ECOMP that provides front end for managing AT&T's Virtual Edge.- As team lead oversaw $5 million dollars in project enhancements of the SDN-GP application in areas such as add, disconnect change management, breakfix, network management profiles, COS Control. - As team lead consolidated overall responsibility for the application, centralizing ownership in a dev-ops model. This reduced the headcount from ~70 in June 2017 to ~15 in December 2018 while maintaining the number of feature deliveries.- As architect redesigned the application from a monolithic spring application to a collection of seven spring boot microservices. This involved migrating from WebSphere to Spring boot embedded tomcat, WebSphere TrustAssociation to OAuth Single Sign on (ONAP AAF), DHTMX JavaScript framework to Angular 6 Typescript, Ant to Maven and XSD to Swagger 2.0. This reduced the average work effort of a ‘large’ feature from ~102 weeks to 16 weeks.- As infrastructure engineer redesigned and modernized the CI infrastructure to use Maven, Jenkins, Jenkins Pipelines, Sonar and Black Duck. This resulted in more than an average of 2000 builds in a single release with builds being built for every pull request, merge and on demand to provide instant feedback on all code.- As test engineer redesigned and modernized the Test CI infrastructure to use Robot Framework, Python, Docker and Chat-ops to transform a manual test effort that took several days into one that ran in under one hour, while providing timely feedback on all scenario results. This caught dozens of defects and automatically stopped deployment before any client impact.Outcome: Successfully enhanced SDN-GP design, delivery and process reducing the total cost of ownership of the app by 60% over 2 years (~$2 million). -
Senior Member Of Technical StaffAt&T Jul 2015 - Aug 2017Dallas, Tx, UsOpen Network Automation Platform (ONAP):Summary: Designer and Committer of the Test Automation framework for the Linux Foundation OpenECOMP (later renamed ONAP) Project- As designer laid out and coordinated the development of the Robot Framework and Python based architecture for the test automation scripts to support the initial release of AT&T's ECOMP software platform into the open source space. The tests reduced the time it took to test an end to end flow from a couple of weeks to 45 minutes.- As executor I worked with a team of three to run the tests against the whole of the ONAP project, triaging issues as they arose and coordinating the fixes within a team of 40 people. The result was a quick delivery of the use cases and with minimum impact to internal systems. This test cycle was completed in under 6 weeks, well below the mean of projects of this size and complexity in AT&T where it normally takes three to four months.- As an evangelist of the ONAP platform I presented at the Open Networking Summit 2017 in the demo booth. I meet and interacted with both executives and technical leads to give them an overview of the initial demo of ONAP. I needed both an indepth knowledge of the networking concepts as well as a broad knowledge of the capabilities of ONAP. Outcome: Successfully released ONAP to the open source world, with ONAP quickly becoming the largest open source networking project. ONAP won numerous awards at the event, including “Most innovative Demo”. For this effort I also received a Technology Development President's Award from AT&T. -
