Google Cloud Transformation Specialist

Current

Mountain View, Ca, Us

Work directly with decision makers and leadership at large enterprises in the Gulf Coast region to deliver modernization and transformation as they move toward Cloud, specifically in Google Cloud. Industries I work with include manufacturing, energy, technology and retail. The most impactful modernization is cultural, and as I help companies reorient toward the right technology culture, modernization and transformation become natural outcomes.Key technologies I help enterprises leverage include AI/ML, Kubernetes, Serverless and Big Data. Obviously Google Cloud has an extremely compelling story around all these technologies. My role is to guide leadership as they identify the optimal architectures and organization to deploy them successfully. I deliver live workshops, training and motivational speaking to help companies accelerate their journey to cloud.

May 2008 - Jun 2020

Enterprise Architecture Leading Cloud

Dublin , Ca, Us

I was responsible for the design and strategy of our datacenter exit and cloud adoption. This included program design, building a cross-functional team of specialists, training them on cloud technologies and then mapping out the existing workloads for a company that has been evolving for 30 years. Once the team was assembled and the workloads were identified, I organized the effort to create a landing zone and began the work on automating CI/CD pipelines to deliver images (both machine images and Docker images) for all workloads. Target deployment modes included Virtual Machines (VMs) and Kubernetes. This required securing buy-in from the COO/CTO all the way down to the individual contributors. Thorough documentation, epic and story design and team design were crucial to build up momentum and ensure the program would be successful.

Sep 2019 - May 2020

Senior Software Architect

Dublin , Ca, Us

I have several responsibilities as an Architect, including direct engagement with engineering teams, managers, directors and VPs to drive for technologically sound solutions to TriNet's business objectives. I also designed and deployed our first kubernetes service, which is deployed now in two geographically distinct datacenters. Through my engagement with the engineering organization, I provide training for Docker containers and kuberntetes to improve developer productivity and quality. Some of the most compelling quality and productivity improvements have come through container based CI/CD pipelines, which include scanning the static source code for security and quality, packaging our REST microservices in Docker images and deploying them to kubernetes where the microservice is then validated for functionality and regressions. Within minutes of each code push, all this data is available to the developer, in addition to a branch specific URL where he can interact with his newly deployed microservice. Our implementation of kubernetes has required a multidisciplinary approach involving the engineering and infrastructure organizations. Automated cloud technologies, including OpenStack for IaaS, Docker for containers, kubernetes for orchestration and various other technologies, like Ansible and HEAT, have made it possible to automate the deployment of our infrastructure platforms in addition to the automation mentioned above for our engineering work.

Nov 2016 - Sep 2019

Chief Cloud Automation Architect

Houston, Texas, Us

In my current role I design Hewlett Packard Enterprise's internal private cloud solutions to enable DevOps. Much of my work centers on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) with Helion OpenStack and Eucalyptus, Platform as a Service (PaaS) with HPE's CloudFoundry distribution, Container as a Service (CaaS) using Docker combined with various other technologies for scheduling, connectivity and system health monitoring. The drive behind many of these technology approaches is increased developer productivity, reduced capital expenditures and improved resilience to infrastructure issues and fluctuations in application load. Achieving these benefits requires more than just using one of these "as a service" layers. It requires application teams to design their applications in ways that integrate with them and leverage all of the automation that is available. I help application teams consume IaaS, PaaS, CaaS and integration with other SaaS solutions in cloud-native ways that drive business value.

Feb 2012 - Jun 2014

Senior Software Engineer

San Jose, California, Us

After a leave of absence I was invited to return to Aptina to further develop and enhance the big data processing system that I had created. The existing system design used Python with a customized network protocol based on a Request Handler, Service architecture. It runs on over 2000 CPUs with deployments on two continents. Daily processing throughput reaches 25 terabytes. Desired improvements included error handling and refinements for specific business processes.

Jan 2011 - Nov 2011

Software Engineer

San Jose, California, Us

Aptina imaging designs and facilitates manufacturing of CMOS digital imagers. Their imagers are found in cell phones and still and video camera made by a variety of companies, including the new generation of handheld HD video cameras like the Flip, Kodak Zi8, Sanyo Xacti etc. In this position I created a large scale processing system that enabled advanced algorithmic evaluation of each imager produced by the company. Daily throughput reaches as high as 25 terabytes. The architecture of the system I created is distributed and runs on several hundred hosts, comprising thousands of cores. The system also facilitates access to previous test data for a period of time allowing Aptina to further test parts based on RMA information, even when the defective part is not present. Python and open source databases are the principle technologies that drive the system, and have proven to scale well horizontally with increased production volume. It is a production critical system.

Oct 2008 - Oct 2009

Electrical Engineer Cmos Imaging

Micron Technologies Incorporated

Micron Imaging designed and manufactured CMOS digital imagers before spinning off as Aptina imaging. Their imagers were found in cell phones made by Motorola and Nokia etc., in digital cameras made by Nikon (and others) and in the new generation of handheld HD video cameras like the Flip, Kodak Zi8, Sanyo Xacti etc.Initial responsibilities in this position included development and maintenance of software to test the CMOS image sensors, including image capture, electrical measurements, etc. Device failure analysis and statistical analysis of all test data were generated and regularly tracked across millions of parts. While in this position I created new procedures to implement subversion tracking and release management (previously there was no revision control for test jobs). I also created custom gui tools to to analyze the logs which resulted from testing and development (previous method was notepad). To enhance the revision control flow I created a custom conversion tool to produce text diffs of binary Excel files (VBA based code) so that tortoisesvn and winmerge could be used as easily as with text source files.I received a promotion during this position from a Level I engineer to Level II about six months into the position.

Research conducted at the University of Utah was based on the fabrication of a semiconductor device which we called a Spin Field Effect Transistor (SpinFET). As a researcher I fabricated and characterized polysilicon MOSFET and SpinFET devices in a clean room lab setting. Devices were further processed using electron beam (nano) lithography to produce a spin lattice atop the MOSFET gate. Results were published in my senior thesis prior to graduation. You can read my senior thesis here: http://www.danielwatrous.com/media/pdf/spinfet_thesis.pdf or in a presentation attached to this LinkedIn profile.
