Finance Campaign Manager
Managing the End Coal Finance programme which seeks to identify and block public and private financial flows supporting coal power expansion. We expose cases where the International Finance Corporation and other Multilateral Development Banks are still investing in coal projects via their financial intermediary clients. This campaign seeks to expose the links between public finance institutions, private sector commercial banks, investors and destructive coal projects and companies; to assess and publicly present the coal and climate commitments of both DFIs and Asia-based commercial banks; to highlight the human and environmental cost of these coal projects and companies; and, in partnership with allies in Asia, support campaigns from frontline communities for remedy and reparations.
Policy & Campaigns Manager
Led public campaigns to make UK development finance accountable to people and planet and for the UK to increase its contributions to UN climate finance and loss and damage funding. I led Global Justice Now's participation in the successful campaign to end UK public support for overseas fossil fuel projects. We mobilised thousands of supporters to take action and built pressure on decision makers through public actions, lobbying and responding to public consultations.I also engaged closely with UN negotiations on climate finance and led GJN's work supporting calls for a new Loss and Damage Fund as the first step towards climate reparations.
Policy & Research Manager
I planned and developed research projects, managed workload and oversaw the budget for a Policy & Research team with five staff members. I independently conducted high quality research on a range of subjects which effect the local community in East London, such as housing in the private rented sector, Universal Credit, wealth inequality and place-based approaches to community development. In conversation with the P&R team and senior management, I produced policy recommendations and shared these with relevant bodies through consultation responses. I also took on a role as communications lead for the charity. This involved co-ordinating internal comms, managing and creating website content, and disseminating research findings via social media. The Policy & Research team also plays a strategic role within the charity, producing briefings for senior management, identifying new funding opportunities, contributing to business development and building professional networks with local businesses, developing political contacts locally and nationally, and co-ordinating the local voluntary sector. Working with full time staff and interns, I have helped our team to organise a number of significant public events in the past year. The most significant of these, in November 2018, was an evidence-gathering sessions hosted with the UN Rapporteur on Poverty and Human Rights Professor Philip Alston, attended by over 100 people. I also represented Community Links and the Early Action Task Force at public events, both as a participant and attendee, in order to build professional networks, promote Community Links’ work and to lobby/influence key stakeholders on particular policy recommendations.
