Malta

In my role as an Education Assistant for BirdLife Malta, I plan and deliver educational events and activities for members of the public, including children, adolescents and adults. I am currently designing BirdLife Malta’s youth programmes, aimed at engaging young people aged between 12 and 18 years old with the natural world and conservation. • Planning and organising of educational and outreach events aimed at the public.• Science and nature communication with a variety of audiences ranging widely in age from young children to adults. • Delivering training sessions for teachers and youth workers, providing them with the knowledge and confidence to engage students with the outdoors and environmental education. • Visiting primary schools and engaging with students via presentations and media to convince them of the importance of the natural world and its conservation, especially in relation to conservation issues in Malta. • Developing an Environmental Leadership Programme to be launched in 2020, that aims to provide young environmentalists with the skills and confidence necessary to become active conservationists and environmental activists within their communities. • Creating and launching nature education programmes targeted towards young people and youth groups in Malta, with the aim of increasing public awareness of the state of local wildlife and the importance of its protection.

Solihull

I was responsible for monitoring the progress of students during their time at the college and helping them to set ambitious but achievable academic targets. I also played a pastoral role, providing students with the support and encouragement they needed to overcome challenges and succeed. Finally, I delivered eight group coaching lessons each week covering topics as diverse as mental health, independent learning and safety.

Honduras

I spent six weeks conducting fieldwork in the Honduran cloud forest with Operation Wallacea, a conservation research organisation that is reliant upon volunteers for the collection of biodiversity data necessary for the protection of the natural world. My role at the field site in Cusuco National Park, Honduras, was to liaise with the science and logistics teams and schedule surveys for the students and volunteers to ensure that they had a rewarding and educational experience. • Liaising with science teams and camp managers to ensure the efficient running of the expedition• Management and coordination of students and volunteers.• Scheduling of the survey programme each week, and ensuring students were aware of their timetables. • Ensuring that students were adequately prepared for surveys and were following the scientific and safety protocols properly. • Interaction with students to maintain their motivation during hikes and collaborating with colleagues to teach students about the ecology, history and conservation of the cloud forest and the animal species we encountered. • Provision of pastoral care and working effectively with colleagues to deal with medical emergencies and evacuations. • Conducting a variety of biodiversity surveys, including avian mist-netting and point counts, bat mist netting, herpetological surveys (including the swabbing of anurans for chytrid), habitat surveys, light trapping for Lepidopterans and Coleopterans, and pitfall trapping for invertebrates.• Leading habitat surveys to collect vegetation structure data required for the quantification of forests carbon content.

I worked in a broad and multifaceted role, which required strong communication skills and an in-depth subject knowledge. My primary role consisted of the tutoring of individual students, or small groups, in science subjects in order to improve their grades. It was also my responsibility to cover classes when teachers were absent. Skills developed:• Communication skills – I gained considerable experience interacting with students and colleagues to explain complex topics in a clear and concise manner. • Teaching – I became proficient in teaching student’s science-based subjects, working with students in an interactive manner to ensure that they were developing a comprehensive understanding of the subject. • Classroom management – In order to cover classes, it was necessary for me to develop strong classroom management skills and learn how to interact with groups of students in a positive and respectful manner.

Peru

I spent four weeks volunteering as a research assistant with Operation Wallacea in the Peruvian Amazon, during which I conducted biodiversity surveys and collected data to assess the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic disturbance on the ecosystem.• I gained experience conducting a range of different biodiversity survey techniques, including transects, point counts, light trapping and mist-netting of a range of animal taxa, including birds, invertebrates, mammals and amphibians. • I also gained experience performing habitat surveys in the rainforest, alongside a team of volunteers.• The surveys were conducted by teams of researchers in remote and difficult conditions, thereby improving my endurance, teamwork and communication skills. • The data collected by my colleagues and I will be used by scientists to investigate the effects of climate change and human activity on biodiversity and animal population trends.
