Daniel Gu is a Software Engineer at Meta. Colleagues describe him as "Having worked in a leading role in a startup environment for the self-driving car company Cruise Automation LLC, I understand what it takes to thrive in a fast-paced industry where one would frequently need to pivot and adapt to new directions a project may take. I met Daniel Gu while attending the intensive full-stack web development program App Academy, and he uniquely stood out not just because of his technical ability, but also because of his ability to adapt to unanticipated roadblocks that he will undoubtedly face in the workforce. During our time together at App Academy, I worked alongside Daniel and three other developers to develop a full-stack application that utilized the MERN stack with myself being the project team lead and Daniel being the front-end development lead. Daniel displayed great talents and understanding of technical applications, such as front-end engineering (React, Redux, Javascript), back-end engineering (Node.JS, Ruby on Rails), database management tools (MongoDB, PostgreSQL), UI design (HTML, CSS), WebSockets, and many more. He understands best debugging practices as demonstrated when he was able to debug a non-responsive delete button on a webpage by isolating the problem to the action itself rather than the button by dispatching the action on the chrome console and then tracing the problem back to a typo on the API Utils. It’s not just his technical skills that impress me though. Daniel is amazingly well-equipped to pivot whenever a project needs to change direction, whether that be for technical limitations or time constraints. When deadlines drew closer and we needed to focus more on back-end functionality, he was able to be adaptive and work with the back-end lead to ensure the entire back-end was connecting properly with our front-end. The final outcome was a well-polished MERN stack application with a responsive and intuitive UI, which we could not have accomplished without Daniel’s technical skills and flexibility with different roles on the team. Because of this, I am confident that Daniel will make a large impact with any team he works with."
