I was responsible for technology at Presien, including our Artificial Intelligence, Cloud and Edge software engineering teams.I led the product development to support two generations of changes to Presien’s hardware platform through to the successful release to customers. The most recent generation uses NVIDIA DeepStream to leverage hardware encoding and decoding on the Jetson platform, as well as batched ML model inference and acquisition from up to six Ethernet cameras.I restructured and grew the Software Engineering teams and worked with the teams to achieve alignment in goals, instigating regular releases across our device fleet for rapid delivery of new features and improved AI performance.The team have since delivered major feature updates including the addition of preview video clips for every detection allowing customers to rapidly assess incidents being observed and gain safety insights. We have also added cloud based post-processing of video previews to automatically assess risk using AI models, allowing customers to focus their assessments.I led the project to design and implement the Blindsight Reporting platform which allows customers to rapidly view aggregate safety & commercial performance metrics across their fleet as well as rapidly drill down to review and classify individual detections.

As Head of Software, reporting to the CEO, I led the transition from start-up to scale-up, growing the team and leading both cultural and process change to keep up with massive company growth. Starting with a team of 3 engineers and minimal process or quality control, I grew the team to over 50 Software Engineers and restructured into independent product development groups. With a rapidly expanding team and product range, I mentored engineers to move into Tech Lead roles for independent product groups with delegated responsibility while maintaining involvement at a higher level. I championed alignment and information sharing in a largely self-managed environment. As the company executed five corporate acquisitions, I provided technology and team due-diligence and managed the integration of newly acquired IP, products and Engineers. We subsequently developed and released new Blackmagic branded products incorporating the acquired technology.I drove development of reusable components to meet continually rising standards for product user experience and lower development time. I worked closely with Hardware Engineers, Product Managers and QA to develop and continually improve release processes for frequent updates across the product range.To accommodate growth, I hired and led a new IT support team responsible for networking infrastructure roll out and support for the influx of non-Engineering staff. I hired and managed the in-house web development team and led the complete replacement of the slow, unreliable marketing site with zero downtime, ready to service growing demand and especially peak loads during trade show announcements.

Clarity Visual Intelligence developed a distributed video surveillance application designed for intelligent monitoring of large facilities with many cameras. I contributed to various projects including a new PTZ camera control module and adding support for multi-channel video acquisition cards.

I joined SGI as a member of the Performance Tools Group which developed user applications and kernel instrumentation for monitoring detailed performance metrics on Silicon Graphics super-computers and workstations. I later worked on SGI's proprietary file systems XFS and Clustered XFS, playing a major role in porting XFS and CXFS from IRIX to Linux for SGI's next generation supercomputers (Altix). I was technical lead for the team developing a portable cluster management system instrumental to releasing CXFS clients for Microsoft Windows and various proprietary UNIXes. I acted as SGI liaison for an outsourced team of Windows developers and later developed key parts of the kernel integration for CXFS for Windows.

At CSIRO, as a graduate, I independently developed the control systems, image processing pipeline and operator user interface for the award-winning RoadCrack prototype survey vehicle. The RoadCrack system was capable of imaging the road surface and detecting cracks as small as 1 mm wide while driving at up to 80 kmph. My software interfaced directly with a cluster of high-end UNIX workstations, frame grabbing hardware, custom processing hardware as well as image processing code for real time road quality assessment. I participated in numerous field trials and worked directly with operators and customers to deliver a reliable & simple to use system.
