Assistant Professor Presso University Of Naples Federico Ii
Research on hybrid-electric and non-conventional aircraft design, including distributed propulsion systems:- Participation in several international projects (see dedicated section).- Investigation of new aeronautical propulsion systems, aircraft configurations, enabling technologies. Development of new preliminary design methodologies focused on such innovations. Validation of the design methods with high-fidelity numerical analyses and wind tunnel tests.- Development of a MATLAB module for a design chain to include the effects of distributed propulsion, aero-propulsive interactions, and hybrid-electric powertrain systems to generalize the aircraft design process.- Detailed model design, software development, experiments planning, execution, and post-processing of a wind tunnel test campaign of a wing with flap, distributed propulsion, and wingtip propeller. The activity included: high-lift propellers and wingtip propeller design, analysis, and testing; development of a data acquisition and motors' control software with LabVIEW.- Collaboration with ISAE/SUPAERO (Tolouse, France) on the benchmarking of numerical aerodynamic software with increasing fidelity (from VLM to RANS) to assess their capability in predicting the aero-propulsive interactions due to distributed propulsion.- Research on the enabling technologies for a quasi-zero emissions commuter aircraft type: propulsion, aerodynamics, structures, and their interactions (e.g., distributed propulsion, boundary layer ingestion, strut-braced wing, structural batteries, etc.)- Lecturer of the Maneuvers and Stability Course, a module of the Flight Mechanics Course (B.Sc.) with more than 50 hours of lessons per year.- Tutoring of the students of the Aircraft Performance Course (a module of the Flight Mechanics Course, B.Sc.) and of the Aircraft Design Course (M.Sc.), with an average of 20 hours per year.- Supervisor of more than 10 B.Sc.\ and M.Sc.\ theses, since 2013.
Post-Doc Researcher
Research in applied aerodynamics: semi-empirical (literature methods and surrogate modelling), numerical (mesh generation, HPC grid, RANS CFD, post-processing), and experimental analyses (wind tunnel testing).- 6+ years experience in CFD, CAD, CAE using STAR-CCM+, HPC command line interface, MATLAB, CATIA V5, Solidworks.- Aerodynamic analysis of both the conventional and innovative turboprop configurations of the IRON project. Support to the aerodynamic design of airfoil, wing, high lift system. Planning of powered wind tunnel tests.- Wind tunnel testing for the RIBES project. Measurement of wing aerodynamic forces and pressure distribution. Measurement of wing displacement under aerodynamic loads through strain gages, laser, and photogrammetry techniques.- Design, aerodynamic analyses (CFD RANS), and wind tunnel testing of a modular vertical tail model with rudder to investigate aerodynamic interference and directional control surface effectiveness at several sideslip angles.- On behalf of the AGILE project: application of game theory and evolutionary algorithm (Nash-GA) to the DC-1 aircraft wing design, in clean and high lift configurations; parametric 3D CAD design and setup of CFD RANS analyses of a high lift system for the DC-2 aircraft configuration; preliminary evaluation of the aerodynamics, stability and control of a Blended Wing Body (BWB) aircraft with low-fidelity and high-fidelity (CFD RANS) methods, selection of optimal configuration through Design of Experiments, parametric aerodynamic design of the high lift system and control surfaces, flight loads and high lift prediction.- Design of an internal, modular, 6-components, strain-gage aerodynamic balance for wind tunnel testing.
Co-Founder
Technological transfer of aircraft preliminary design methods into commercial software.
Ph.D. Student
Development of methodologies for aircraft aerodynamic characteristics prediction and preliminary design of regional turboprop aircraft by CFD (RANS) about: vertical tailplane, fuselage, high lift devices, dorsal fin, karman, aerodynamic loads. Wind tunnel tests to validate the numerical approach.
Cfd Engineer
Support to the research in applied aerodynamics, CFD mesh grid generation, analysis of the aerodynamic interference of the components of a regional transport aircraft on its directional control, editing of technical and scientific report in English language.
Student Internship
Directional stability analysis of different configurations of regional transport airplanes through semi- empirical methods and CFD technique. Developed a new procedure to evaluate the aerodynamic interference effects on the directional stability of regional transport and general aviation aircraft. Developed algorithms to analyse many aircraft configurations with semi-empirical methods and to compare results with numerical simulations. The work brought to a better understanding of the aerodynamic interference effects of the aircraft components on the vertical stabilizer. The obtained results give an increased accuracy and confidence in the aircraft preliminary design phase.
Sales Agent
Searched and cared for new costumers. Call-centre operator and marketing responsible. Developed and managed the on line sales market on the eBay platform, which gave an increase of the company's turnover.
Student Internship
Aerodynamic analysis of a new wind-marine vertical axis turbine with cross arms (Mythos) through the editing of an existing code written in Fortan 77, based on the lifting line theory, and execution of tests in towing tank. The obtained results present a substantial increase in the turbine efficiency with respect to conventional configurations (straight arms).
