Throughout my college career, I envisioned corporate buildings, bustling hallways, huge budgets and prime-time TV advertisements. However, five days after graduating from Oklahoma State University, I accepted my first job as marketing coordinator at Prairie Quilt, a quilt shop 20 miles from my hometown. The plan was to work there for a year while living at my childhood home to save money. Classic millennial move, I know. Plot twist to my big city dream, I am still working at Prairie Quilt nearly six years later, but now as director over a small marketing team. Why, you may be asking?Small business culture. Bosses who treat their staff like family. Coworkers who put their whole heart into the business. Small budgets that force especially creative thinking in my strategies. Prairie Quilt is a relatively small company, (29 employees total,) so I have had to wear many hats throughout my career. Those hats include: project coordinator, copywriter, event planner, graphic designer, email campaign developer, website designer and at times, even cook. A few of my highlights of my career while at Prairie Quilt include: - Growing beyond the original retail space, resulting in two building expansions.- Leading two grand opening celebrations with two record breaking days in sales.- Building and launching a new online shop, with no prior experience in retail web design.- Being named a top 10 quilt shop in the nation by Better Homes & Gardens.- Increasing 25 percent in revenue from 2018 to 2019.A booming quilt shop business in 2020? Yes, it is possible.
