Profile bio

About Dani Stock

I'm a freelance writer and brand storyteller. I also collaborate on creative marketing projects with talented colleagues at Studio Collective. I've built my own business (AOK Craft Beer + Arcade) — and I've worked for several others in the B2B and B2C spaces, marketing everything from kids' snacks to enterprise SaaS solutions.Through it all, I've learned how powerful brands can be when they know how to articulate their value and tell stories that people (actually) want to hear. Fuelled entirely by peanut butter, good books, cuddles from my scruffy terrier and a low tolerance for bland copy, I help you get through to the humans you care about by writing stuff they care about.

Phd Researcher In Digital Media

Waterloo, On

My doctoral dissertation connects new media studies, rhetoric and health to explore how social media spaces shape narratives of illness.I was fortunate enough to have my doctoral research funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. My work is published in the Canadian Journal of Communication and on scholarly websites. I've presented my findings at several international conferences.Abstract: While there is a great deal of scholarship, particularly within health studies, arguing for the value of social media in supporting and empowering patients, there are relatively few explorations that critically evaluate these spaces from the perspective of new media theory. My research complicates the celebratory rhetoric of so-called Health 2.0 by analyzing the affordances and constraints, social practices, and political economy of digital participatory health culture to understand how constructions of illness in these spaces sometimes replicate offline power structures. In identifying the dangerous philosophical legacy of liberal humanism within real-world and online articulations of patient care, I put forward a posthumanist approach for contemporary healthcare. Successfully defended July 2015.
