In the summer of 2013, I worked for BOC Gases Ltd. as a Process Engineering Intern. I adapted to various roles from project work to on-site production; I was required to perform monthly checks on the air separation units to assess whether the internal atmosphere of the unit housing was inert. The reviews formed the basis of a project I was given the responsibility for leading; on improving the Nitrogen purge system in order to maintain a regular inert atmosphere. The project required presenting my proposal to a review committee; after acceptance it was then my responsibility to contact relevant contractors for the installation and to acquire quotations for the equipment. I was also given the role of re-evaluating the site P&IDs for changes in process control and instrumentation in which I would physically reassess the pipelines and valve labelling on-site. I took a final role in my penultimate week at BOC in assisting in a plant shut-down and plant thaw that occurred due to a build-up of impurities in the reboiler; the distillation column was brought to atmospheric temperature and vented in which I assisted to regulate the ventilation of the plant.From my academic studies and research into the process equipment I had already gained an extensive knowledge of the compression equipment and heat exchangers on-site. During the preparation of my project on improving the Nitrogen purge system I utilised vital project management and time management skills that I have gained over years of experience; I utilised project schedules and managed my time effectively by adjusting the schedule to suit problems during the project. Another vital skill I incorporated during my placement was the ability, and confidence, to liaise with other departments in the company; as part of the project I required inputs from the operation managers and production team, this required a considerable about of team work, which I have gained from my project managing experiences in the past.
